Stuck pics..

Lets see 'em!

This is from last weekend when i found out one of my hubs wasn't engaging. Yep, 10,000 lbs in soft sand doesn't work for very long in 2wd. Luckily i had my buddies military rig on 42's to pull me out

Let's see your stuck shots! Post up!

Re: Stuck pics..

Stuck? Who gets stuck??? Stuck is when you can't get it out. Anything else is just part of the adventure....

Re: Stuck pics..

I prefer to use the term, "momentarily detained".
Adventureduo, did you figure out what was wrong with your hub?

I've got automatic Warn hubs, for the manuals hub, can you just get one side working(Hub) for some traction?

So far, I made about 3 "momentarily detained" moments in Anza Borrego a good practice.
Got Stuck, reversed slowly, didn't work, switch into 4H, pulled right out.

Sorry no "stuck pictures"

Pretty sandy area where you were at.

Re: Stuck pics..

AD, were you aired down when you got stuck? What was the tire pressure?

I'm trying to figure out what pressure to use in sand, which we don't have a lot of in Montana.

Not without a locker for either. If a hub fails or is unlocked the axle spins and the open carrier will cause all power to go to that tire. Since the brakes are disconnected from the axle even the braking method with limited slip differentials won't work.

Somebody mentioned a newer hub that fails to locked instead of open, but otherwise without a locker you might as well be 2wd.

AD, what kind of pressure were you running? I think if rescue wasn't imminent (read: the parking lot) dropping to really low PSI would have helped a lot. I would do 10 or less in a Jeep, not sure in the heavy van because I've never dropped the pressure that low.

Re: Stuck pics..

When I'm in soft sand, I have my tire pressure at around 22-25 psi on a 10,000 pound rig with BFG 315 tires. I can crawl places in two wheel drive that amaze people that don't understand the benefits of low tire pressure. Really saves me from having another "part of the adventure".

Re: Stuck pics..

Saline, i think the hub was trashed when i bought the rig. I know it sounds funny to hear.. but we mostly run fire roads and wash board roads with our rig.. sometimes sand,.. but usually i try not to stop. About 5 trips ago i tried to climb a rocky face and someone outside the truck told me the front wasn't pulling at all. I figured that was cause we're open diff upfront so i didn't think too much about it. Im assuming its been this way for a while. We are going to Dynalocs now.

NRL, yeah no locker so the front passenger would just spin. Driveshaft would spin... so we knew it was the drivers side hub that was trashed since it was not doing anything.

Ed, we were just coming into camp from the pavement... i did not have a chance to air down. I looked around and said, why? There's RV's everywhere... so i proceeded with caution. Well there's like spots of quicksand (for lack of a better word) and i just happened to stop in one. When i started rolling again the ass end just started sinking. At that point i double checked the ATLAS, the hubs and made sure i was in 4x4. This is when i found out about the hub. I aired down to 20lbs and tried to drive out of my hole. It wouldn't. Thank fully i had my buddy on 42's to tow me out to camp. The next morning i drove right out no problems.

Jage, yeah exactly. No locker, no worky. First rig ive owned in years without lockers. It kind of sucked. The front was just spinning. I tried airing down but it wasn't enough.

The whole deal with all of this was.... if i aired down to next to nothing from the ghetgo...then i would have been just fine. It was just dumb luck that i happened to stop where i did.

By the way, i wasn't the only one...

Sorry for the middle finger, it's not my picture..

And we saw a RV in our own camp get stuck too.

it was a weird weekend. No Rhyme or reason to the sand pits.

Re: Stuck pics..

Incidentially with the Atlas it is easy to test whether your front is engaging because you can put it in forward-only low range. With the hubs locked the van should drive. Testing this on pavement is fine. I know, hindsight for you now...

Re: Stuck pics..

Yeah i feel like an idiot now too... because i tried to drive in front 2wd when i first got it.. and it wouldn't go. I thought it was something that SMB had modified in the ATLAS to not allow us to do that. LOL

So yeah, since we bought it... all trips have been done in 2wd I must be a good driver Yae here come the dynalocs
