The Humble HellBetty rides

FINALLY made it out for a decent van trip.. all the way to Alabama to ride and attend a cycling hill climbing clinic. Ok really the clinic was just an excuse to ride southern mountains after a long gnarly winter!

First night out was at friends’ outside of Beattyville KY, so Red River Gorge area. Have new (ride) friends here in AL so Hellbetty has camped a few nights each in their meadow (overlooking horse pastures and ridge lines) and up on Cheaha Mountain, highest point in AL.

First day of riding i have never been wetter on a bike, got stormed on riding up on the ridge. Here she is on Talledega Scenic Route with FeltBetty my bike, after 2 days of riding the ridge and Cheaha Mt. Wow I really should have taken more photos!

Oh and there’s my new Buckstop bumper, swing arm and cargo box AKA the Filing Cabinet as my mechanic calls it- funny guy. (The bumper set up is another story) Nothing much new inside but this long riding trip has inspired me to bring some ideas forth. FeltBetty travels inside alongside the bed, and I always sleep sooo great there!

Third photo is what I saw at my friends’ when I woke up first morning- hot coffee tucked away in a cooler on the spare- yummy

Curious does anyone off road vans up at Chocclocco Mountain? I’m really close to there too. Won’t have time to stop unless we get another storm day tho. NO I wasn’t planning to off-road there, just think it’d be fun to see it! Maybe see the expressions pulling 4x van into the parking lot...

If you ride dirt, some of the best mountain biking I've ever experienced was in Alabama. A few places come to mind:
- Oak Mountain - big state park with plenty of camping options and great trail network
- Coldwater - smallish, but a local gem in Anniston
- Lake Lurlene - way out there, but super cool lake trails with camping

I plan to head back just to ride those places on my own bikes. The first visits were on rented bikes when moving my kids into college at Alabama and Clemson. And now that I also have a gravel grinder I can do some road rides when the weather isn't on my side.
