Note to self: Install backup camera sooner rather than later....
|
For most normal people, one would think a backup camera would help. You have to understand, it isn't so much I didn't see the tree as I didn't look. I thought I was backing straight back on the path I had just come to get a different look at the obstacle in front of me. I didn't realize that on my attempt to get over said obstacle that the rear of the van had slipped sideways so my path backwards was not the same as the one forward.
No way around it, it was just boneheaded operator error.

On the positive side you may want to try to locate some of those operable windows like we have on the side doors. I always thought those would be nice in the rear.

My wife's and my thought as well. It wasn't really her first or even second thought when I asked her if she wanted to see my handy work before I tarp over the back of the van when I got home last night. She of couse said "why tarp over the back of the van?". Duh, to keep the water out.

Did the tree push the entire bumper swingarms, and therefore the bike racks, up and into the windows? Any damage to the bumper?

I haven't taken a really close look yet as it was raining hard shortly after and I had to pack up and head home from the mountains. At a glance, it looks like the bumper is fine. My custom made bike rack swing arm is a different story. I'll take it all apart this weekend and see if it can be salvaged.
I can tell you this, I am at least cutting those tabs off.
Back to work to pay for my day of 4wheeling ....
