Re: 2010 Forum Meetup Weekend
Sounds like a wonderful trip... maybe not for the Forum Meetup weekend? 11 hours is a bit much for me to there and back it for just one weekend/one night.

Re: 2010 Forum Meetup Weekend
My wife and I are planning to be in Joshua Tree on that weekend, though we won't have our Sportsmobile yet. If anyone is interested in a meetup there and doesn't mind being seen in the presence of a Westfalia, let me know.

Re: 2010 Forum Meetup Weekend
The location of this camp sounds wonderful. The cost sounds a bit prohibitive, but we won't be able to make it anyway. We will be camping on the beach in California. Heading to Valley of Fire tomorrow for just an overnight camp.

Re: 2010 Forum Meetup Weekend
Yet another SMB event I won't be able to get to. Oh well. That's the same weekend as Syncro de Mayo in Hollister Ca, of which I am the main organizer. I will however be at the Overland Expo in AZ and I bet there will be a tons of SMBs there. One of these days I'll make a SMB meeting!

How about this for a Southwest Weekend at Canyon De Chelly - Morning of day one, Meet and Greet
2x4 & 4x4 split up. 2x4 either tour the Canyon rim or take group guided tours.
4x4's
- Afternoon of Day One. Enter the Canyon with a guide.
One guide would ride along with one of us staying in contact with the group via radio. The half day rate (3 hours) for the Guide depends upon the number of vehicles. [/*:m:1maa3xjz]
- Night One: Stay in the Canyon. The guide I am working with has four possible campsites. The guide will stay with us and provide storytelling around a campfire. Cost for the overnight varies on the number of campers. ($80/person)[/*:m:1maa3xjz]
- Morning of day 2, spend another 1/2 day (3 hours) in the Canyon touring the sites with the guide.[/*:m:1maa3xjz]
- Afternoon of Day 2 spend touring the public access points outside the Canyon.
Night Two: Group camp outside the Canyon.
Day 3 to be determined... [/*:m:1maa3xjz]
Below is the cost for up to five vehicles (4x4 rated)
Tour Divided Cost
1 vehicle $150
2 vehicles $105
3 vehicles $90
4 vehicles $82
5 vehicles $78
Add for overnight fee $80 per person
Saline still interested?
Others?

I will be in Las Vegas that weekend for the BMX race (bicycle motocross) watching with my old factory Schwinn team mates. I will be in my SMB camping somewhere.

Re: 2010 Forum Meetup Weekend
Just a thought for a Northern California meet and greet location.
*
Last weekend we did an overnight trip to the California Lost Coast Area.
*
There was a BML campground that would serve very nicely for meet and greet someday.
Wailaki campground Just cut and paste this into Google maps 40° 0.993'N 123° 59.957'W This is at the south end of the King Range National Conservation Area
- Accessible for 2wd vehicles.
12 sites can hold 2 vehicles each.
Off the beaten path.* We went in 3 BML campgrounds and only saw two other vehicles on the weekend.
Low cost.* $8 per night.* $4 if you have a annual pass from the feds. (no one came by so we could have skipped out but didn’t)
Piped running water
Table
Fire Rings
New (relatively) pit toilets
Trailhead to hiking trails
Mountain bike trails nearby
Town of Shelter Cove nearby with Ocean and beach access
Class 2 and 3 roads for some easy back-country driving
Nice views, not nearly as spectacular as the Sierras, but nice
Mattole river for fishing
Close to California Redwoods State Park for scenic drives
About 4.5 hours north of the Golden Gate
