Unfortunately, hurricanes seem to pummel Mexico and Baja in particular on a regular basis. That's bad news for the folks that live there, tourists and anyone else traveling in the area, but the good news is that the Mexican people are highly resilient and creative. Washed out roads are a fact of life there, but in a short amount of time, detours are usually set up. It may take one many miles out of the way, but traffic and commerce always seem to find a way around. I've seen washed out bridges replaced by laying huge cement pipes side by side,(so the water can pass through) and then a layer of dirt on top allowing loaded semi's to drive across. Back in the early 70's when I first traveled to Baja, there were few bridges or even paved roads, yet we found our way to Cabo and back in an old Landcruiser. Think of it as adding to the adventure....

Going to be an interesting season, might be better for 2 wheel travel for a bit.Click image for larger version

Just to update things here, talked to Jeff (Arctictraveller), and he’ll be updating here as well, got a few dates down to start the planning process.
If everything goes as ordered, looks like I’ll be leaving Boulder November 10th, picking up the wife in Vegas on November 11th and head to San Diego area to meet up with AT and Mrs. AT potentially at Fiesta Island area (same as last year) on November 12th/13th. We’ll most likely cross the border at Tecate on or before the 14th, race starts the 16th and I think the idea is to make it down past Coco’s Corner for race watching, then explore further south. Have to be down in Loreto by November 26th when Alex and Lake fly out.
Anyone else interested in joining? All or part is fine.

From what updates I’ve read, they have created bypasses at all of the washed out areas of Mex5, it’s still in rough shape but doable in high clearance vehicles, allow extra travel time.
Here’s the link.....

My plan is to pick up Mrs A/T at the San Diego airport, and cross the border the next day after doing some provisioning. I expect we will watch the race somewhere South of San Felipe, then head further South the next day. With all the washouts, it may be a bit slower going, but I have zero doubt we can make it. I don't expect any hard core 4 wheeling this trip, I think it's going to be more about spending quality time relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun, drinking margaritas and eating plenty of fish taco's. Anyone care to join us?

Wish I could buy other commitments by Mrs. Turn make that a no-go. Next year will be better for us.

2018 Baja 1000-November 16-18

Same co that Ray hooked up a discount with last year, was able to log in to my act with them and renew the rig that was saved and add the trailer all online, pretty nice. Lewis and Lewis

Well, if you’ve followed my big fat remodel thread you’d know that the van remodel is unfortunately not complete and is in no condition for us to make Baja this year.....A big bummer! You’d think I would have learned by now that things almost always take twice as long as originally thought. It was an ambitious project to begin with, let alone complete in the shortened timeframe.
Next year I won’t gut the van 6 weeks before a trip....promise! Plus we won’t have any time constraints when we’re living full time on the road.
