Thank you, Dave! You guys are all such a wealth of information! Hope we can make it to a meet up sometime and get to meet some of you guys. Thanks for all the info, and yes, all the fires are putting a damper on things. :'( Our kiddo was supposed to go to summer camp a few hours from where we live, near Idyllwild, but there's a raging fire out there, too, and his session was cancelled this year. Thanks again, everyone!

When you said along the river I thought of above of the Sierra Vista Byway. But it's so close to the fire I doubt you'd want to be there. Granite springs CG would be a nice place for a group meet one of these days. We do need to do another meet-up one of these days.

Enjoy your trip.

Take a look at Leavitt Lake. Fun drive in, great fishing and dispersed camping. There is also a nice little campground at Leavitt meadow right off the highway.

Here are a couple more back up options for dispersed camping south of Bridgeport. Not exactly High Sierra, but there are spots along the Little Walker River Road, and nice quiet Obsidian Campground at the end of the road.

Or, no water to speak of but a bit higher, there are dispersed camp spots in the Bodie Hills. Look along Bodie-Masonic Rd for ideas.

Probably only way in is off of 395. Sonora pass closed on the second due to the Donnell fire from eagle meadows rd to mono county which is the road into Leavitt. The fire ran up the canyon from donnell lake, jumped the highway and burned down much of the Dardanelle resort and store. I hope they get it under control. Seems everyplace I camp has been hit with fire over the last 15 years.
