Afton Canyon 2WD??

Is Afton Canyon passable in a 2WD. Starting at the west end it looks like getting to the campground is not an issue, but are the river crossings and sand past that going to be two much?

Re: Afton Canyon 2WD??

I would say no but YMMV. Driving into the wash is a definate no...at least when I did it. I thought I was going to have a problem in 4wd but made it OK. My front locker wasn't working when I did it and I sure would have felt a bit better if it was. I'm told that the sandy conditions do change from time to time and a ranger told us it was the worst he had seen in years. But my van is heavy and I had mud terrain tires. Taking the Mojave Trail east is questionable. The water can be deep at times by the bridge. Maybe this will help:

Also there is a good blog on the Expo site.

Re: Afton Canyon 2WD??

Thanks Daveb. Do you agree getting to the campground should be a go?

Re: Afton Canyon 2WD??

I've found that in that general area your best luck for 2WD travel is in the spring after rain has tamped down the sand (but definitely not when still wet). As more people travel over it, the sand gets really beat up on some of the trails (the other end was horrible once when I was there, like dune sand). And the whoops can make it worse.

The only way to know is to go out there (although that's not feasible until the fall; you might try after the first big rains).
