Re: Alaska 2012

He could have avoided his demise.

He was 50 yards away from a docile male bear. After at least 8 minutes of taking pictures (evidence from his camera) from that far too close distance, he stopped taking pictures. Park rules and common sense require you to move away from any bear you encounter, at least 1/4 mile away. I guess the photo op was just too good to pass up.

It is rare to be attacked by a truly wild grizzly. One's that have learned humans are source of food or a sow with cubs is another story.

File it under Darwin.

Re: Alaska 2012

We're interested in a Ferry/Highway trip to Alaska. Are you allowed access to the van once it's on the ferry? Can you sleep or prepare food in it? If not, what are the sleeping accommodations on board? Last time I checked the price for the van (EB) was pretty high, are there specials through travel agents or? Any bits of info would be helpful.

Re: Alaska 2012

took our new Sprinter on the ferry from PR,BC to Skagway in early may. you cannot sleep or eat in your van. a couple of times a day they let people go down to their van and when in port as well. sleeping accommodations on the bigger vessels are single beds with bunks with a toilet and shower. Food was better than I expected, but still limited in variety.

I am not aware of any specials, except in the winter schedule, the driver goes free with the vehicle
