Alaska 2012
Just confirmed my return ferry reservations from Haines to Bellingham on the Alaska Marine Highway. So that's the final commitment. I never been north of 100 Mile House, BC, so the rest will be all new territory to me. Driving up and ferrying back.
I'll try to keep you posted.

Re: Alaska 2012
Are you taking the Cassiar Hwy up through BC or going via the Alcan? The Cassiar is pretty cool and much more remote than the Alcan, although both are nice.

Re: Alaska 2012
I am planning to take the Cassiar Hwy north. While it's more remote, I hear it's in better condition than AlCan and the one all the truckers prefer, so, while trucks can create problems, they also can be very helpful if you get in trouble.
Leaving mid-June. Pretty excited ... well, really excited!

Re: Alaska 2012
I'm headed up to Haines next week for the summer. Taking the Cassiar. It's a road that shouldn't be missed. Bring your fishing rod.
The Alcan is in much better shape, decent cell phone coverage, a faster road and more heavily travelled. But the Cassiar is a gem.
Enjoy!

Re: Alaska 2012
I had to abort the Alaska trip in Prince George due to a recurring bad back issue. I struggled home and am making plans for next year. In 2013, I think I'll let the ferry take me and the van up from Bellingham to Haines and then drive back south. It always seems easier when the road is leading home.

Re: Alaska 2012
And driving south you get better mileage because it is downhill.

Re: Alaska 2012
Sorry to hear about your back. But the ferry (possibly air tires down to meet height requirements), is a good choice and Haines is a pretty cool seaside community. At the end of the road adjacent to the bay is good SMB camping, if you wanted to stay in town, otherwise there are pullouts from town to the AK border alongside the river which is great for boondocking.
