Mike I just fell into your thread after many months of not looking at the forum. I had forgotten about meeting Lake and his parents at Toroweep on his 3rd birthday. He built a Frank Lloyd Wright style house out of blocks of wood you carry everywhere you go. I asked if it had a bathroom. He said it did but I couldn't use it! His dad had a tackle box to carry all of his cooking stuff from spices to utensils. As soon as got home I made a copy. Best single "tool" in my van. Ruth and I would love to be on this Alaska trip but we are headed to France in June to celebrate our 10th. Canal barging on the Canal Du Midi for a week and then I don't know but it will be free form. Have a great Alaska Adventure and be sure to do it again so we can join you.

Hey Chris and Ruth! Hope things are well. Glad you're enjoying the Cook kit idea, lots of great memories from that toroweap adventure, esp from our young budding architect, 6 now! It's our 10th anniversary in June as well, the12th, we'll be checking out glacier bay, can't wait! Happy 10th to us! Have a great trip!

Thanks for the note. I had forgotten your name...I apologize. Ruth and I still talk about that trip and especially memories of Lake being a very busy 3 yr old building his house...with no pants on. Truly the cook kit draws raves from anyone who sees it. Everybody is going to make one, The hardest part was finding the right tackle box. Alaska is on the list.

Look like we've got us a "Meet-UP". I've changed my Teklanika reservation to July 5 departing on July 10, then 2 nights at Riley Creek departing in the 12th. We should be able to see you all then.

You will LOVE AK!!! If you do head Noth on the Dalton...Make sure to make reservations at the Hotel (there are two and I can't think of the name of the one we stayed at. . .blue trim, will take you to the ocean etc...)when pulling into Deadhorse /(Prudo Bay) The meal in the place was the best I'd ever had! You will rub elbows with the oil workers. You have to make a reservation with them if you want to go the the Arctic Ocean...the public is not allowed past the Oil co.'s checkpoint. WIth the reservation, they drive a bus past the checkpoint and take you on a guided tour. . .(not much to see, but worth it if you want to dip your toe into the Arctic Ocean). The trip up was the best. . .and how many people can say they were at/above the Arctic Circle! If you plan to fish (Halibut or Salmon) make sure to take a charter out of Nanilchek (sp?). . .you have a couple hour LESS boat ride to get to the fishing grounds. . .well worth it! Milepost a must, Valdez, Exit Glacier a must too-can stand next to and have to option to hike and 3-4 hours to reach the top...the Denali HGY was great, slow driving-POTHOLES/WASHBOARD, but the sights and wildlife!!!. . .. . .Good luck!!!

We went to Alaska the summer of 2004. Took the ferry from Bellingham to Skagway, visited friends in Anchorage, drove to Homer then drove home, 62 days total. My favorite guide book was "Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping" by Mike and Terry Church. They sixth edition just came out, January 31, 2014, 486 pages, $16.45 at Amazon. The book is a great resource. I also like their Pacific Northwest Camping Destinations book.
