I never knew that two-wheel drive specifically caused washboards. In my case I have no choice, as I only have two wheel drive (well, four if you count the duallies ), but I'm curious what it is about two-wheel drive that makes washboards? Is there any driving technique to do (or avoid) to make it happen less?

Also, does this only happen when the roads are wet? I only ask that because up north, if you drive hard on a wet dirt road, then every pothole or flaw that you "smash" through only gets worse -- much more so than when dry.

Re: Anza Borrego over New years (Was Mojave)

There are probably several causes for the washboard road surface, I just notice when riding behind somebody in two wheel drive in soft sand that the back wheels will spin and leave a washboard, but somebody in four wheel dirve will not (unless they are hard on the gas peddle and spin the wheels on purpose). I look forward to meeting you all.
PS - If anybody needs a place to park overnight in La Mesa (San Diego) on the way out to Olla Wash, you are welcome to at my place.

My tentative plan is coming in tomorrow night, then heading to San Diego to pick up Jen early am on 12/31 and to the camp that day.

Anyone heading from the east side on Wednesday that would like to meet up? I am thinking of heading out sometime in the morning.
