Looks like I'm working on New Years day through the 7AM on the 3rd dammit. Anybody staying longer than the following Sunday?

It looks like I'm un-employed for the foreseeable future, so we can stay as long as we want. I do have to get some work done on the van at Ramsey's, but don't know his exact schedule. We might camp a couple days, run to his shop for a couple days, and then return for more fun. It's all just a bit early to tell though. I do know we plan to hit Death Valley afterwords, if that interests you your more than welcome to join us. Perhaps a week after Anza?............

That might work. At least I might be able to see a few folks before they leave out on Sunday. Gonna have to play it by ear. Hate to go all that way for only a couple of days.

Re: Anza Borrego over New years (Was Mojave)

Daveb I am disappointed to hear I may not see you but work is work. As of today the head count is about 10 van/other campers arriving between 12/28 and 12/31. I am hoping to meet up with anyone coming in on 12/29 at Ocotillo Wells about noon and caravaning in to Angela's camp together. Anyone wanting to arrange a meet up on a different day at Ocotillo Wells should PM me and I will share contact info and chords. I don't have a real count on who is coming in on what day. The only other general item is for everyone coming is to bring some firewood. I will be bringing my fire pit but can't carry enough wood for 3/4 nights. My other idea is that we have a potluck on New Year's Eve so plan to share a food item one night. Since this is NOT an exclusive club and the camp spot will allow all anyone wanting to join the group is welcome without prior arrangement. I look forward to meeting old friends and new.

Re: Anza Borrego over New years (Was Mojave)

It loos like several of the folks attending may be hams. Anyone have a favorite simplex frequency (2m)? Anyone have race radios? (We could do those freqs too). We're in for the pot luck, and will bring firewood. About all that's left for me to do is pack and provision, looking forward to it....

Re: Anza Borrego over New years (Was Mojave)

Some State Park Regulations:

1) Fires must be in metal containers.
2) Drive on the established trails. It's a wash so the road varies, use common sense, no trail blazing.
3) You can boondock anywhere in the park unless otherwise posted.
4) Park within 15 feet off the established trail.
5) Dogs must be on leash

The ranger that patrols this area takes his job very seriously. I have stories for the campfire.

My go-to frequency is 146.445. Charlie is the guru so I'll defer to him.

Re: Anza Borrego over New years (Was Mojave)

Good info Ron. I'll have my home built "fire pit" that contains the fire off the ground. It's big and ugly but it works like charm.
Thanks
Chris

We might be able to stretch into the 2nd unless we run low on food and clean underwear...

Here are my thoughts on a Ham frequency.

Usually when I get off the main roads I monitor the national calling frequency 146.520. I like to know if others are in the general area, and also that way I am listening in at the top of the hour for the Wilderness protocol*. My recommendation would be to have the primary simplex frequency set to 146.520 with a secondary of 146.445. If 146.520 is too busy, then switch over.

I am also running APRS and it looks like Anza has good coverage.

Here is a list of repeaters in the area that I copied from the OAUSA forum.
For their Borregofest Event they use Laguna Mtn.+ 147.150 107.2

REPEATERS IN THE AREA
Palomar + 147.075 107.2
Palomar - 145.440 107.2
Palomar - 146.130 110.9
Palomar + 147.730 107.2
Palomar + 147.130 107.2
Palomar - 146.100 100.0
Palomar + 147.030 103.5
Anza - 144.740 107.2
Anza +146.685 107.2
Anza - 145.340 107.2
Anza + 146.085 107.2
Monument + 147.840 100.0
Monument + 147.240 103.5
Black Mtn. + 147.720 100.0
Laguna Mtn.+ 147.750 100.0
Laguna Mtn.+ 147.150 107.2
Borrego Spgs. 146.470
Borrego Spgs. 146.700 no tone

*Wilderness Protocol

The Wilderness protocol (see page 101, August 1995 QST) calls for hams in the wilderness to announce their presence on, and to monitor, the national calling frequencies for five minutes beginning at the top of the hour, every three hours from 7 AM to 7 PM while in the back country. A ham in a remote location may be able to relay emergency information through another wilderness ham who has better access to a repeater. National calling frequencies: 52.525, 146.52, 223.50, 446.00, 1294.50 MHz.
