Away from Colorado: How about Lake Meredith?
We want to take a short trip the week after Christmas- any suggestions on where to head, going out of Denver, not looking to bust snow?

The areas around Moab are usually your best bet in these parts. Not sure how far you want to drive though. I've recently found a few good off the beaten path camp spots between Fruita and Moab I can point you towards.

As little as possible! Of course I also have to go over the hill. If you want, email me the spots and I'll check them on the map.

How about Eastern New Mexico? Then you wouldn't have to go through the mountains. I like the area around Roswell. Especially Apache Sand Dunes park

Sand Dunes- is that White Sands you're talking about? That's not a bad idea.
I looked at a national weather map and North Texas looks like it will be in the 60s over Christmas, so I pulled up Lake Meredith in the pan handle and it has two 4x4 only campgrounds. Anyone been there?

Jage,
Just checked the map.... Lake Meredith and Palo Duro are not too far apart. I think either one might be a good destination. We went right past both when we came up to your neck of the woods in October.
It may come down to whether you want water or Canyons on this trip...
Palo Duro looks like it would be about 450 miles while Lake Meredith would be 420 miles.

Oh yeah, one look at the Google images and I think Palo Duro is going to be it.

Jage - Sorry about the late reply, I've been travelling. Apache San Dunes are East of Roswell, while White sands is west, and you can drive on the Apache Sands while you're restricted from White sands. I have been to Lake Meredith, but not to the 4x4 camping areas. It was really nice, and the camp ground we stayed at had great views of the lake. I haven't been to Palo Duro, so I can't help you there.
