Didn’t drive it and not sure whether or not it helps but: just checked (“Washington BDR”)there are quite some videos on youtube of different sections done by Tacomas ranging from 4 to 6 months back.

I have done parts of the MABDR and COBDR in my van.

I did the whole MABDR by motorcycle and it is doable in a van. Only one short section I remember might have been difficult due to rocks.

To some degree I have given up doing them in the van, for me what is fun on a bike can be boring and real slow in the van.

Backcountry Discovery Route. Quite some states have it, leading across the country showing you different areas.

This is an overview of the WA BDRs for example

Ok, good to hear that a van is doable on the Mid Atlantic route. I know exactly what you mean...it is shocking how far and quickly you can cover some serious terrain on a capable bike especially compared to a 4x4. I ask the question because I primarily want to take my wife and let her get a mild taste of what I've been doing the last 30 years. She'd never enjoy going 2-up offroad on the bike and frankly I've never wanted to ride 2-up type terrain or risk her getting banged up. So I'm looking to get my mind right, slow down a lot and take her on a van trip but still show her some offroad.

I have not checked all the routes but just found this on the WY route FAQs:

All of the roads used on the WYBDR are open to vehicles. If you do decide to drive this route you will want a 4×4 with high clearance as the route has deep puddles, large rocks, huge ruts and steep loose grades. Always stay to the right and go slow around blind corners to avoid head-on accidents with others using the roads. We recommend traveling south to north to minimize head-on traffic.

When we filmed the WYBDR documentary our support vehicle remained on major roads as much as possible.

Oregon will be getting an official BDR route on February 4th. The existing route was put together by another group.

I did the Colorado BDR in my Jeep. One of the guys had a full size pickup with a pop up camper. He had no issues other than some additional pinstripes.

Makes sense and my situation as well. Definitely need to get ones mind right to do BDRs by 4x4 instead of 2 wheels. Even the backcountry hard surface roads are a lot slower in a heavy van.

Though an older post, MISS these types of actual 'usage' of a rig vs. upgrades/troubleshooting etc...hope folks trying these routes in their states or SMB members trying them when they head out will do their due diligence and post a "trip report"....love and miss those so much! Thanks for reviving this one Steve!!!!!!!!!
