Baja in the Fall

We've been going to Baja every February - April for the last 22 years but, until a couple months ago, had never visited in the Fall. We wanted to experience the warmer water, seasonal flora and lack of tourists in the off season and it was fantastic. We entered Baja at Calexico East on Oct 1st and spent all our time on the East side within a few hours both North and South of Loreto. We knew it would still be hot - and it was - mid 90's days and 80's at night. Our attitude was "embrace the heat". The water was clearer than we had ever seen it and, at 84 deg, swimming was fantastic.

Our camping style in Baja is to set up in one location for a week or more at a time - driving a couple hrs into town every 7-10 days for supplies. This requires some extra gear on top of the two sea kayaks and two inflatable SUPs we pack. Having the extended van with the back 20" left open for gear allows us to get that done without filling up the living area.

For us, in Baja, it's all about bringing enough shade. We set up a ramada on the beach to hang out under while enjoying any breeze there might be and an awning and extra shade netting for our living area and kitchen tent... pretty darn comfy. My USB fan was critical to staying comfortable sleeping at night.

The paddling and swimming was spectacular, the mountains and desert greener than we had ever experienced and there were very few other campers on any of the beaches we were on or passed on the way down. The mosquitoes got pretty bad in the South at the end of our trip but really a small price to pay for the solitude and extravagant beauty.

We came home by way of Joshua tree, Mojave, Bishop and up the western edge of Nevada. All spectacular this time of year.

Wow - those Pic's are definitely encouraging my desire to go...only obstical is it's 2,000 miles from me. Convinced me to put it on a bucket list though.

Mosquitos? Wow, I've never experienced them there, but I only go in the winter as I can't take the heat. Great report, it got me even more fired up to go, but not till Feb. Thanks........

We see folks from Nova Scotia down there

Also on Mosquitoes ; depends on where you are and the season. Wetter areas have them and they diminish significantly in the winter. Fall tends to be create moisture from the hurricanes, storms...It is about standing water....Some beaches also have no see ums year round, others have none....Best to come prepared, and enjoy when they aren't around

The Baja

Ahhhh, Baja! Made my first crossing at Tecate in the early 60s for a surfing trip and at age 72, my last surf trip to San Juanico was 3 years ago. My last...maybe. For those who are shy on visiting Baja, what a shame. Once you get past San Quitin, the real Baja and its people are there to greet you and what a greeting it is. Mexico HW 1 is one of the most spectacular adventure roads on the planet. Viva Baja!

2000 miles? That's not bad, my average road trip is around 6000 to 7000 miles. I just put in my time behind the wheel getting where I'm going and then relax and enjoy. Making plenty of interesting stops along the way really helps too.

Baja in Fall

Enjoyed your post and pics!
We were in Loreto as well during October, we spend a week cruising down and a week cruising up with a week in Loreto every year. We actually do two trips a year, once in May to Cabo and again in October to Loreto, Dezante Bay. These are the two best times of the year. Enjoy exploring the Baja looking for that perfect beach. We usually stop at Coyote Beach but last year we had No C EMS so we went searching for another location.
Again enjoyed your post. Sam

Glad y'all liked the post. On the bug subject - we generally don't have any issues when down in the spring. Some places will have the no see ums but even then, not a big problem. A little bug juice, or just long pants and sleeves, at sundown and good to go. There was a two day storm that dropped about 4" of rain while we were down there and I think that got 'em all excited... and HUNGRY.
