Baja Sur

We went ~ 700 miles south of the border down the Baja California penninsula over X-Mass.
The road (Mex 1) is as scary as ever, but the beach was wonderful

We took what is left of the dirt road next to the Enchanted Islands and thru Gonzaga Bay in Baja Norte

Camped on the beach on the Sea of Cortez

The sunrises were spectacular

The dogs had a good time

Not many gringos this year, but lots of bicycle tourers on Mex 1 (not my idea of a good time!)

Re: Baja Sur

Fishing was slow, the water was ~ 60 degrees, but the SCUBA diving was outstanding with mantas, moreys, lobster, and lots of tropicals.

It took 2.5 full days of driving to get down from N. AZ. The new road (Mex 5) from Puertocitos to 8 miles north of Gonzaga is the best 38 miles of highway in Baja north of Dos Cabos. The remaining dirt was graded to Rancho Grande, the rest of the way to Mex 1 is the same. Mex 1 gets a little better when you hit Baja California Sur, but driving the pavement on Mex 1 is terrifying.

We were on the beach for 10 days, and had it to ourselves all but 2 days when we shared it with a Canadian with a 4wd diesel Mitsubishii right-hand side drive van.

It was nice not to have to deal with the extreme tidal ranges that you get in the northern Sea of Cortez.

The campsite was reasonably protected so it was easy to cook and play in the water every day (Baja can be WINDY) It was a nice trip, but as usual, too short.

Thanks for the extras... yep, I got the envy, just not the cojones to do that one as a solo rig.

Re: Baja Sur

So, was this your last great adventure before selling this van? A new SMB in your future?

Re: Baja Sur

Great TR and that sunset pic is outstanding. I'm one of the other 2 or 3 SMB owners in Flag as well.

Re: Baja Sur

Fantastic, jstanley. I've got to get myself back down there sometime soon. We'll see how the new Mex 5 changes things on that coast.
