BDRs Anyone? - Page 2

Wow, the Idaho BDR has some appeal! We're probably looking at next summer for that one. I'd like to do NMBDR first, this year. Home state and all. Plus, if I bail half way through, I'm not far from home!

The Idaho BDR is 2 wheel vehicles only looks like. Most of the roads look good, but it says motorcycles only and some of the bridges have barricades to prevent 4 wheel vehicles.

There is a post on ADVrider.com that says the barriers on the 50" bridge shown in the video were removed in 2018. Don't know if there are any others, though. It also said there was an alternate route for that bridge that was only a couple miles out of the way. Looks like it's gonna take some more research!

would be nice if those barriers were removed. that bridge is the beginning of a road on one side and completely unmarked from the other. nothing that mentions you cant get through till you hit that bridge. its not real far to backtrack, but still the forest service should do a way better job of letting people know. youll find a lot of that here in Idaho. gates open in one section, locked in another without anything letting you know that the gate on the other side is locked 15-20 miles or bonejarring terrible road later only to find out you gotta go back, lol. always a crapshoot.

I was just on a bit of that section (section 2) of the bdr this past weekend. some of the best dirt roads ive been on so far this year....but that will change fast now that access is being restored (snow melting). actually thought about going by that bridge, but it adds 20+ miles of dirt road and the wife had had enough jostling around the van already so took the easy way out.

keep in mind that weve had hundreds of thousands of acres burn in the last 5-6 years. theres road blowouts all over the place. its easier to put up gates closing areas then to repair them, so that seems to happen a lot. be vigilant on calls to ranger stations when planning. will save you tons of time.

your last point is really good advice. Here in NM, forest roads are often closed after a burn, with no notice. Only a call to the local Forest Service office will suffice. Same in MT, when we've been up there. Every once in a while a rancher will decide to lock a gate on a public road, but usually it is the FS closing a road for good reason, but with no notice. Workarounds and backtracking can sometime be lengthy.

^^^ point about ranchers reminds me of 2 Texas brothers buying all kinds of land and putting up gates as well around here. All locked. Not sure if it impacts the bdr, but it’s impacting all kinds of people I know. Apparently what their doing is illegal, but it will take years to be resolved within the court system.

I'm building my van to be a BDR-ish rig. I have CO and NM on the list as the first 2, although AZ, ID, and OR are not far behind.

What's considered minimum gear to run? 33's and rear locker? Any maximum height restrictions? Normally I'm asking these questions on a different type of forum, but vehicles here seem to range from a 4x4 RV to a shorty RB to a 170 sprinter.
