Boise area info wanted
Hey guys,
Heading out this coming weekend for a week long van trip. Leaving the Seattle area and heading directly towards the Boise area to visit friends and family. We had originally planned to just pass through on the way to Yellowstone and Glacier but have now decided against that since we will be taking our dogs and they don't seem to go well with those National Parks.
Anyway, what I'm looking for are ideas of places to 'get away' in the Boise area. Within a few hundred miles or so. Tetons, Bitteroots, Sawtooth etc. Bookdocking preferred, away from people! I saw the post about the sportsmans access and that is somewhat discourging. Hoping to find some hikes in the 10 miles and under range. That is about the limit our 7 year old can go on fairly easy terrain, (and one of our 10 year old dogs).
Places to camp near water are our favorite! Lakes or rivers. We have four wheel drive but not tons of ground clearance. Besides the hiking boots, we may take rock climing gear and possibly mt. bikes if the trails can be managed by a 7 year old.
Thanks for any input and feel free to send me a pm if you have some 'secret spots' you wouldn't mind sharing but want to keep secret!

Re: Boise area info wanted
ive been told to try that pass as well, but had no idea it was closed other than for winter. thanks for the tip on calling first
tetons are 4+ hours from the boise area, but always worth the trip if you have time.
sawtooths are great, but they are popular around here and generally busy this time of year. especially since they arent currently on fire. even if you dont camp in that specific area, its worth a drive to the lakes to get some pictures.
when will you be here and for how long? if your going to have time during the week, i can point you to some nice places that see lots of use during weekends, but rarely have people around midweek.

So, why is it always closed? Sounds like a great run.

Re: Boise area info wanted
For me, in July, it was closed because of snow. Now it's closed because of a mudslide. High maintenance road I guess.

Mrs rastover, I want to do this run! Seems like an ultimate trail that is worth a #1 rating.

Definitely worth doing. We'll be doing it in the SMB.
