Camping recommendations for the Shasta/Trinity Rec. Area?

We will be coming back from Fresno next week, heading north and we will be looking to spend our honeymoon night with the new camper, that is. We continue to have the same husband / wife combo.

Do you have any recommendations around the Shasta Trinity Recreation area? It seems like there are quite a few dirt roads heading in all directions but a pointer to an especially scenic area would be appreciated.

Thanks as always.

Oh, First Night!

(You really going to get out of Fresno that early to go this far?)

My recommendation

In Redding, take Hwy 299 West (about an hour) to Weaverville, then Hwy 3 North to Yreka. It’s a nice departure from driving I-5 and once on Hwy 3 there are lots of forest service roads to turn down. Weaverville is a nice historic town to visit.

Or, Turn off I-5 at just above Lake Shasta and take the Forest Service road to Trinity Lake, then up Hwy 3 from there. Has some great views of Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake and Trinity Lake, Trinity Alps etc.

You can't go wrong in this area. Hope it helps.

Hopefully these google links work.

If you have the time, I'd suggest spending one night within a day's drive
of Fresno, so you can drop into Sportsmobile the next morning to get any
potential little issues fixed.

For our Sportsmobile Honeymoon weekend, we drove the 4x4 route up
Bald Mountain near Shaver Lake. Fantastic views up there, and an old
lookout tower!

(This also happened to be our actual honeymoon.)

Thanks!

That to both of you, that was exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate the pointers and map links.

I also appreciate the advice to stay close to Fresno for a couple days but we don't have that option.

I wish we could spend more time but we have young children and it was enough of a favor to get someone to cover them for the 2 days while my wife and I do the pickup and drive home. I guess in one sense it will be a honeymoon redux:-)

In a different scenario, it would seem like a good time to swing through Yosemite and cover all the ground you recommend but that probably isn't this trip.

This is more a sprint north with a few short detours.

BTW Geoff, when others ask me why I bought the SMB, I point them at your web page. You have outstanding pictures for selling the value and potential of the van.

Again, thanks.

Mark,

We are driving south on Monday to pick up our van. Did you end up taking highway 3? If so did you find any great spots along the way?

Thanks
John
