CO Ski/Snowboard Trip

What: CO Ski and Snowboard Trip. Not quite an epic trip, but will be fun.
Why: Why not? Needed some winter excitement and a SMB to exercise.

This trip will include camping in the SMB and lodges/motels.

Before I headed out to CO I needed to do a test camping excursion since I haven't been out since buying the SMB several months ago. Headed to Lake Cumberland KY. I was the only one in the campground.

Plan: Depart KY and head to Denver to pick up my son who was flying from VA. Then we would head to Telluride for a couple days followed by Wolf Creek. Depending on how those go, we may hit one other before I take my son back to Denver to fly back to VA.

Took 3 days to get to Denver because I could.

Had a lot of this

And this

Had to have some rain

More of this

3 nights of "exciting" but cheap "camping"

On day 3 made it to the destination state (haven't mastered sign photos on the move)

And more of this

Finally, something of interest in the distance

Even closer

Made it to Telluride

Lodging in Telluride

Telluride from the gondola

Telluride from the slope

On the slopes

My son

We just arrived in South Fork where we are staying for Wolf Creek. We are staying in a motel instead of the van. Heading to Wolf Creek in the morning.

We'll head back to Denver on the 21st. If anyone has suggestions for skiing/snowboarding on the way back to Denver please advise.

Thank you very much. I wasn't aware of Monarch.

Monarch is always worth it for the less corporate town experience and is not insanely expensive. If you were a little more adventurous and few days before needing to be in Denver, you could head north on the "back route" ,avoiding I25, towards the big resorts. I think the weather should be good in the high country for the next week with light snow forecast over the weekend. Copper Mountain allows overnight camping in a specific lot and is close to the 70 which would be a direct route to Denver after. There's lots of options.

Enjoy your time in the Rockies.

Thanks much everyone.

Don't have to be in Denver until the evening of the 21st and don't plan on using I25.

With Presidents Day weekend ahead we wanted to avoid crowds as much as possible. Right now I'm thinking Monarch on the 20th and Copper Mountain on the 21st. Crested Butte might be a little too much, so to speak, unless there won't be crowds on the 20th.

I was thinking Breckenridge would be swamped this coming weekend.

Presidents weekend at copper and breck will be insane near the the main lifts. Both places have lift tickets over $150 now. It is a joke. For nearly the same price you can go to Silverton and ski real big mountain terrain with a guide.

Nice TR. That definitely looks like the plains! Unfortunately I never can go out there anytime but summer. I would love to take my van out there and ski but not in the cards for me I'm afraid.

We are at Great Sand Dunes NP today, heading to Leadville to check it out tonight. Denver tomorrow afternoon, then Boulder tomorrow night. Loveland on Sunday/Monday. Rockies are awesome!
