Father-son roadtrip. Looking for ideas

A bit closer for you herb than some of the other great suggestions would be Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia. Could do both boondocking and campgrounds.

I scared my kids away from 4 wheeling for a number of years by taking them on scary trails.
Be easy on them!

My kids always loved plain simple tent camping a fire and smores.
Oh, and skipping rocks into the river.
