Get ready to get your BAJA on! 2/27/14 - 3/7/14

Get ready to get your BAJA on! 2/27/14 - 3/7/14

Baja Desert Racing - Sea of Cortez - Pacific Coast - Gray Whales

This is going to be an EPIC Baja experience - start planning now!

Something for everyone - 4 Wheel Drive, 2 Wheel Drive, Ford, Chevy or Sprinter.

02/27/14 Thursday 12 Noon - Meet on the USA side of the Border in Calexico, CA - Cross in to Baja through Mexicali, BC - Caravan down Mexico Hwy 5 to San Felipe - Camp on the Beach just north of town (2wd is no problem) - Stay in camp for the evening or head in to town for Tacos, Clams and Cervezas on the infamous San Felipe Malecon.

San Felipe Malecon:

Sunrise on the Sea of Cortez by San Felipe"

The same uncrowded location:

02/28/14 Friday - San Felipe Baja 250 Contingency - Hang out at camp or explore San Felipe - Contingency is the pre-race festivities and technical inspection of the race vehicles. There is plenty of raucous action, food and drink on the Malecon and an opportunity to get up and close with the racers and their cars - you can also choose to stay on the beach and relax around camp - a short drive out into the desert to watch the racers test their cars is an afternoon option - late comers can meet up with the group at camp.

Contingency on the Malecon:

03/01/14 Saturday - San Felipe Baja 250 Off-road Race - For those interested, we will get out on the course around Race Mile 4 to see the race up close and personal - Motorcycles and Quads start at the crack of dawn - Trucks and Buggies start around 10am - 4X4 is not a bad thing to have on this adventure, but on the other hand we will probably be parked next to a 1972 Pinto and a 2wd '89 Ranger - we won't leave anyone stranded and I know all the sneaky ways out to the course - After the racers all pass by, we will saddle up and make our way south towards Puertecitos - maybe catch some more race action depending on the course - then on to Gonzaga Bay to camp for the night. The road to Gonzaga is paved all but the last few miles and is very scenic.

Robby Gordon's Trophy Truck at Speed:

03/02/14 Sunday - Enjoy Gonzaga Bay - Swim - Paddle - Fish - Eat - Drink - Tan - Get lucky and swim with a Whale Shark - Just get Lucky - Do whatever you want! - There is a Bar, Restaurant and Hotel called Alfonsina's where we can have a great dinner and party in the evening. Last time Jan and I were there... Sorry what happens in Baja, stays in Baja!

Alfonsina's:

Re: Get ready to get your BAJA on! 2/27/14 - 3/7/14

03/03/14 - Monday - Head south from Gonzaga Bay towards Coco's Corner; this is a graded DG road with washboard and a few small rocks, any vehicle can make it down this road, just secure the fine China in the cupboards - Stop for the obligatory "Soda" at Coco's Corner and meet Coco, enough said - This is where it gets interesting for the 4X4 rigs - from Coco's Corner we will split the group for about 50 miles or so - 4X4 group will turn left and head southeast through Calamajue Wash (Frog Canyon) with it's beautiful canyons and water crossings - 2wd and others will continue on straight ahead to Hwy 1, about 43 miles of washboard and light rocks, Ive seen Honda Civic's and even Tractor Trailers make this road, but slow going is in order - both groups will meet back up at El Crucero which is just off Hwy 1 north of the Bahia de Los Angeles Hwy turn off - Next is Bay of LA and camping on the beach there for the night - LA Bay sunrise is something not to be missed!

Coco's Corner:

Calamajue Wash (I think, from scatter's gallery):

Bahia de Los Angeles (LA Bay, Bay of LA):

Whale Shark (I got to do this in '92 down here):

03/04/14 - Tuesday - Stuck another day on the Beaches of LA Bay - Do what you want - Rent a Ponga and go fishing - Sit on the beach - Take a day trip to Mission San Borja...

Road to San Borja:

Re: Get ready to get your BAJA on! 2/27/14 - 3/7/14

03/05/14 - Wednesday - Experience the best sunrise in the world over Bahia de Los Angeles - Drive to San Ignacio - Explore San Ignacio - Visit the Mission San Ignacio - Head west to the Pacific, and La Laguna to the whale watching camps - Explore La Laguna - Camp there for the night.

San Ignacio Mission:

San Ignacio Oasis:

Whale Pongas:

03/06/14 - Thursday - Take the whale boats out to see the young California Gray Whales and their mothers. This is an amazing experience and something you might want to repeat in the afternoon. You will get to see and touch the baby whales and their mothers for a few hours and then head back to the camp for an exquisite meal from the local fresh supplies - Head back to San Ignacio and prepare for the return trip.

Orientation and Lunch Palapa:

We did this trip last March, here is a little footage of one of the highlights:

Alfonsina looks amazing. Long time from now but putting it down on the calendar. Looks like general aviation is the best way there.
