Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

I'm in Zion, South campground site 26 if anyone wants to join me at the site for free camping.

It is hot - 90's day, 60's nite. I expect the same at Toroweap

Chris - we will be meeting at 11-12 on the 19th - Utah time, not AZ time.

Bring everything you need, and fill the tank at St. George or so. Zip, zero, nada, no services at Toroweap.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Mike

Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

I will plan to meet Mac and anyone else who wants to drive in to Toroweap together. Tentatively meet Monday at 1pm, somewhere outside of Zion, unless you want to meet in Zion-may be easier (let me know)

Mac-I sent you an email with my cell.

Mike, which way will you head in from Zion (directions and GPS coordinates would be great)? I will go the same route, don't have time to really research right now as I am still slammed at work through Saturday. I will also send you a PM with my cell.

Also I suggest once again we monitor Channel 16 on the CB and 146.520 on 2M Ham.

Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

Steve:

The best way into Toroweep from Zion is via the Clayhole Route (County Highway 5) just south of Colorado City, Arizona on Highway 389/59 (to Kanab and North Rim of Grand Canyon). You can either drive on blacktop back through Hurricane to get there or go cross-country on dirt via the Old Bridge Road at Rockville.

Lets plan on meeting at the Clayhole Road turnoff (just south of Colorado City) at 1:00 pm MST on Monday. I will monitor channel 16 on the CB. The GPS coordinates for the turnoff are N 36 56.486 W 112 57.220. This route is 60 miles to Toroweep.

If, for some reason, you would like to stay in Zion longer and not be concerned about meeting up with me, I am not concerned about the drive into Toroweep so could just go on in and meet you at Toroweep instead. Zion is a beautiful place and, if you haven't been there, you may not want to have to rush to meet up with me. It's up to you. I don't mind going in alone to Toroweep. So just let me know what works best for you.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Mac

Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

Thanks Mac,
I will plan to meet up with you at at the Clayhole Road turnoff.

I think I have been on the Old Bridge Road at Rockville when I went to Grafton Ghost Town. Any idea how much time I should allow by taking the Old Bridge Road to Apple Valley then to Clayhole turnoff (I assume this is the route)?

Also any idea of road conditions?

Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

Plan 45 minutes from Springdale to Colorado City. The weather has been good so the road should be dry and dusty. See you at 1:00 pm at the Clayhole Road turnoff.

Re: Get Together Around Vegas/Southern Utah in September 2010?

Sounds good Mac. It looks like this route is called the Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway:

See you at 1pm.

If anyone else, (i.e.REF) wants to go this route then let me know.

Mike:

Thanks again for organizing the Toroweep trip. It was great seeing five Sportsmobiles camped together. I had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and the others. If you are ever out this way again please let me know. I'd enjoy hooking up again.

Regards,

Mac
