Re: Goler Wash/Barker Ranch/DV Spring 12

Chris, I walked all the way back to the ranch that is still there.

I talked to a ranger driving through Mengel Pass, and he told there is nothing left - they cleaned it all up. And that is what I noticed.

If you have any pictures of the remains, I'd like to see them. Wish I had gotten back there to see the burned out shell. Oh well, at least I got to see it when it was still in use.

Mike

Re: Goler Wash/Barker Ranch/DV Spring 12

Chris,

I don't mind that I missed the ranch - it is just another excuse to return to DV! And, Barker Ranch was just an excuse to take a long hike on Friday while I waited for you guys to show up on Saturday.

I'm glad to see parts of the ranch still stand.

Mike

Re: Goler Wash/Barker Ranch/DV Spring 12

Well, one thing I've learned from watching Woody's videos is I drive a heck of a lot faster on dirt roads than those in the video. There certainly were a few dicey spots on the road where I would have slowed down, but there were other spots where I would have been cruising. Perhaps it's because I don't have 4W low gear. Or, perhaps it's I'm just not patient. At Toroweep Chris was going to guide me over a rough spot in the road. I forgot he was doing that and was already through the rough area before he got out of his rig. So, I guess it is a impatience thing! Guess I need to slow down and smell the cactus.

Re: Goler Wash/Barker Ranch/DV Spring 12

So Mac.....were you being patient at Toroweap when that big rock jumped in front of your right front bumper and the ranger had to winch you off?
I also think we all go faster when we are alone. By the way, in retrospect I think you could have made the entire route in 2wd. The only spot of difficulty would have been the Goler Wash waterfall. Ron made it in 3wd though.

Yep, definitely my impatience. I was so excited to finally be at the campsite I was looking ahead at the camp rather than at the road in front of me.

In looking at Woody's videos I think I could have made the Goler Wash run. Even if I couldn't have made it up the waterfall (which I think I might have), someone could have winched me up. My only concern would be that my 2W low doesn't go as slow as the 4W low so I would have been riding my brakes a lot over some of the rough spots, particularly going down hill. But I really would have enjoyed the fun of traveling in a group.

Thanks again for the pictures everyone!
