Yes and no on that, The switchbacks would have been ok in the dry but wet he was not sure also the road by patato butt would have had issues.

Yosh wants a SMB back in the garage.

The snow makes it look great. Glad to hear it didn't cause problems. I would suppose springtime in those conditions would be a bit slicker you think? I'd love to be there. Oh, BTW how cold diid it get?

Re: Gooseberry does white rim in Moab

really nice! Thanks for sharing. I'm curious if this would be doable in the summer in a 2WD van? It's pretty impossible to judge the grade with camera pictures.

Thanks
eric

Yes it is. I've done it. But it must be absolutely dry...

Re: Gooseberry does white rim in Moab

I would say yes if you had a Limited slip diff . it gets pretty tight after white crack and a open diff would not be fun. Also summer would be HOT so spring or fall.

The shot with Gabe and Dave above me on the trail was real steep and offered no room for error on the right turn at the top.

Re: Gooseberry does white rim in Moab

I think you'd have to be a pretty good driver and a bit lucky to get through the whole trail in 2wd. You don't really need 4wd more than twice but those are at steep loose sections and would be pretty hairy, especially if you met someone coming down and couldn't use momentum to muscle up. I take my hat off to someone who made it up the last 100 yards of Murphy's Hogback in 2wd.

I think it also depends on which way you do it. I would think it would be a bit easier doing it from east to west.

Re: Gooseberry does white rim in Moab

Looks like the switchbacks up from Mineral Bottom are even better than before the washout. Great report. Brings back memories of pucker factor on the climb up Hardscrabble Hill from Potato Bottom. Yikes!

The problem with 2wd on the White Rim is that you are going to tear up the road. It's just steep and loose on Murphy's and Hardscrabble, and a couple other spots on the west side between the White Crack and Mineral Bottom. That said, you could do the whole east side in 2wd without concerns, especially with a limited slip or locking diff. That means you could drive Potash Road out to the White Crack or beyond, then reverse and climb out the Shafer switchbacks (or vice versa). Camping options along Potash and at Airport, Gooseberry, and White Crack. I drove the Potash Road and Shafer climb in 2wd (by mistake) several years ago and only slipped a bit on one gravelly climb.

Anyway, FWIW, that's my two bits.
