Gunnison Today

So as plans change last minute we'll be headed out 50 and wind up around Gunnison. Anyone know of a good place to boondock just over night? GPS coords appreciated.

Re: Gunnison Today

If you head south on Highway 114 just east of Gunnison (toward Saguache) you will pass through the Cochetopa Creek Canyon. Watch on the right (west) for two tracks leading into the trees and a glimpse of a toilet. Pull in. BLM campsite with table, toilet, fire ring, lots of parking space. There are several more like it in the next few miles to the south but most are more exposed to the highway. However the highway gets NO traffic at night, so even then it's good camping.

Hartman Rocks, W on 50 and South before bridge leaving town, follow signs to turn off on Right, head up kill hill(obvious big hill) and pick a spot anywhere. Great camping if you keep heading left along the rock and cliffs.

Re: Gunnison Today

Our pleasure. We were happy to find that spot while fleeing the horrifically high winds around Westcliffe over Memorial Day weekend. Other than the winds, Westcliffe is a terrific destination

It was a further piece down the road than we were expecting, but a great spot once there. This was after turning around once the day angler vacated. Thanks again, nothing better than not going down the road wondering if the gravel pullout is the best thing in the next 10 miles... so helpful to have a destination.
