Re: Hiking down into the Grand Canyon (Many Photos)

Great pictures Mike. Sorry I wasn't around when your van broke down and you had to be towed to Vegas. My mother came down from Wyoming to visit me on my birthday. We were out and about showing her things outside Vegas that she hadn't seen. I assumed since you didn't answer your cell that you got your rig fixed and was heading home when I finally got back into town. Glad you had a great trip and hike.

@JoeH... I don't know any of the ingress particulars. I do know that we are hiking out after a 6 day trip. Christine booked it, paid deposits and I'm in sort of a prep mode for the interim. But, your question does bring a question. If the river is at the bottom of the big ol ditch, how do I get there/out of there without hiking? BTW, no mules are slated as of this writing.

@Gnarvan... can't be any worse than driving in Brooklyn

If you're hiking out then you're probably launching from Lees Ferry which is 15 miles downstream of Glen Canyon Dam and near the town of Page. 6 days to Phantom Ranch sounds like a rowing/paddle trip. Do you know which company?

You don't get the big whitewater (with the exception of the roaring 20s and the upper Gorge on the last day) but you get a bit more variety in terms of scenery. You launch where the Paria River comes in and it's wide open. Marble Canyon gradually deepens and in 10 miles or so you're 3000' deep. On day 4 or 5 you'll hit the Little Colorado River and it will be deep blue and most trips stop there for a bit to play. Rounding the corner you cross the Butte Fault and the canyon opens up into the Big Ditch as it were. The last day you run Hance which is not a trivial rapid, Sockdolager, Grapevine, and Zoraster Rapids so you finish with some big whitewater before probaby hitting the Bright Angel Trail at Pipe Creek (just downstream from Phantom Ranch). You will love it.

I've never driven in Brooklyn. I have yet to run the Canyon but I will one of these days. As Mike has shown in his pictures the Grand Canyon is one of those scenic overload kind of places. Make sure you take some good hiking boots.

Do you have a waterproof video camera? A helmet cam is a nice way to document a relaxing swim on a warm day.

Re: Hiking down into the Grand Canyon (Many Photos)

@JoeH...Sounds like us... I know Bright Angel is the out point. When Christine gets back in a bit, I'll be able to find out which company, and put-in. I had a lot of whitewater fun on the Ocoee in my younger days. I am all about some scenery and the associated serenity nowdays, with a bit of adrenaline at the end being just about right.

Maybe there exists a possibility for a meetup. If it is ok with you, I would like to pick up some first hand info on Toroweap by pm, as we intend to spend a few days after the river doing some exploring of the general area

@Gnarvan... Christine is lobbying for a HERO helmet cam already... she usually gets what she lobbies for. And I'm thinkin' you should run that river in May also.

I'm done walkin' all over Mike's thread now.

All you ever wanted to know about Toroweap is in this thread from 2010:

www.sportsmobileforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5064

The first few pages work out the details of a group meeting and the last few have pictures of the area. Road information is in there also.

Go. You will enjoy it.
