Re: Kern River Trip - Aka Kern River Cleanup

Good report. I grew up in Bakersfield(<sucks) so I have spent a lot of time on the Kern. It's sad that so many people trash the place and don't care what they leave behind. It would be great to collect all the trash and be able to return it, on their front lawn. Thanks for doing way more than your part to clean up!

On our road trip last summer we went on a backroad through the Northern Cascades and camped along the way. Holy crap, we couldn't believe how much trash there was at all the campsites. We easily filled a trash bag at each spot. I filled one bag with shotgun shells alone.

Somebody dumped trash along the river near my dad's place. He went through it and found a name on an old bill. Contacted the sheriff. The sheriff watched while they cleaned up all the trash, even stuff somebody else dumped.

And the slobs are not necessarily who you think they might be. Back in the early 1990s, we helped cleanup a river campsite in western Montana that had been trashed by a Montana lawyers' association on their annual outing. We didn't have to sue them. The river ranger gave them a call with some useful legal advice.

Thanks for the report, I often forget how things are in most places. Here in Jackson Hole 99% of people pick up there dog poop and would never think of leaving trash. Its great living in a place where people save all year just to be able to visit. Last year on or Ak trip we camping a lot in Canada and we were very impressed with how clean it was. In fact most of our plans this year are all Canada trips.
Anyway I always enjoy your reports Thanks again
