Here are some pictures from our 3 week trip through N. Calif, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and back.
We started out on Fri Oct 25. Stopped for late lunch at French Creek, a few miles from home. This young eagle was across the river asking one of life's eternal questions... "ok - I'm out here on my own - what do I do next?"
We stopped the first night here (40.54381,-121.633828) just inside the Lassen NF on Hwy 299. Like most of our camp spots, this is just a flat spot off the highway. We use this one a lot because it's just how far we can get from home after our usual noon 'early start'.
Next morning we headed toward Susanville. I love finding odd place names on the map and then going to see them. So - because of the name - the next stop was Crater Lake, CA.
Sherri getting ready to try her luck with the fish.
Van with guard dogs / welcoming committee.
Sherri had the lake pretty much to herself.
Next we headed east to Eagle Lake - because neither of us had seen it before. Now we have. Then south thru Susanville. We intended to stop at Fort Sage ORV camp near Doyle. I've stopped there a dozen times and it's always been empty or nearly so. Not this time - full of ORVers. Who'd of guessed?
So we continued south on 395 toward Reno looking for a spot to camp. Took a road to the south-east into Nevada and ended up in a mini horse ranch far suburb of Reno. (Full size horses - 5 acre ranches).
Just past that, we took a dirt track up into BLM land. The road ended in a turn-around in a saddle with a nice view. (39.79751,-119.92484)
The immediate view wasn't quite as nice. The place was the local shooting gallery. The ground was littered with casings of every caliber, broken bottles, shot up cans, clay pigeons, basketball, bowling pin, fish tank. You name it, they dragged it up here to see how good it would blow up. But it was just a in-at-dusk-out-at-dawn camp with no other good prospects, so we settled.
Next morning we drove thru Reno, east to Fernley, then south on 95 toward Vegas. That day, our 'Hour and a half of daylight left - where do we camp?" moment came just south of Scottys Junction between Beatty and Tonopah. We took a dirt track east toward the hills. It wandered around for about 4 miles without a landing or flat spot. We finally grabbed a spot in a flat gully next to the road. (37.357842,-117.189145)
Next afternoon we made it Vegas and visited with family for a couple of days.
I'll continue with the meat of the trip into Utah next posting...
