Is Macks Canyon a first come first serve? Either way this sounds like a great spot.

I've never been anywhere in this area.
Also Looks Like I will be in my 2wd SMB for this trip. But a 15 mile dirt road doesn't scare me.

Unusually deep snowpack in the Cascades this year. Normally, by June, there is not much danger of flooding but does anyone know when the Deschutes River is expected to reach flood stage this year and how disruptive the flooding might be?

The road to Macks Canyon is at worst washboard. It is pretty much flat all the way with two small hills where it goes over old tunnels. Any car could drive to it.

Regarding flooding along the lower Deschutes, I've camped along the Deschutes maybe two dozen times in various times of the year and only recall serious deep flooding one year. The next time I drove along the river I saw a tree truck stuck up high in another tree well above normal water level, but this was an unusual event. Minor flooding does happen but the BLM keeps an eye on the river and there are several dams that control the flow. The access road in is a former railroad right of way and is high enough it very rarely floods. The campgrounds are often lower than the road and are closer to the river bank. The river is very popular with flyfisherman and rafters and the campgrounds are busy on summer weekends.

The Deschutes is dam controlled and mostly spring fed. It doesn't flood seasonally. We should be fine.

I have camped at Mack’s Canyon in the past. All of the campsites are well above the river. Am hoping to head over there on Sunday for a few days and will check out the group campsites.

The road in is two wheel drive friendly.

Those are the dates. It sounds like the location will be Mack’s Canyon BLM campground on the Deschutes River a bit north of Maupin OR.
