looking for suggestions on must do and see's in Ak.

I am leaving in 8 days for a 30 day road trip to Alaska. I was hoping you guys or gals could tell me about your favorite camp sites along the way. And must doos and donts We are Leaving from Jackson Hole the plan is to head to Seward and maybe hang there for a week or so and explore that area (or not.) I think we are going to swing down to Valdez and do the Kayak day trip I saw someone just do. Other than that Just driving around looking at it.
Any great Ideas I would Love to here them.

Thanks
Ron & Sheila

Re: looking for suggestions on must do and see's in Ak.

If you don't have it, get a copy of the Milepost for Alaska and Northern Canada information.

Drive slowly, many roads are not in good condition this year.

Don't miss Kennicott/McCarthy in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Forest. You can dry camp by the river, or stay at the Kennicott lodge.

Drive up the Dalton Highway, at least to the Artic Circle. But the best scenery is further north. Go all the way to the Deadhorse if you can. So many places to camp along the way.

No trip to Alaska is complete without camping in Denali National Park. We stayed 4 days at Teklanika campground. Get the Tek pass and take advantage of the buses.

Take a ferry ride across Prince William Sound.

Camp at the end of the spit in Homer.

Drive up or down the Cassiar Highway (it is in good shape) and stop in Hyder. Drive out to see the Salmon Glacier. Drive further out to see a couple more glaciers. Get some fudge on the way out of town.

Those are the highlights. Review the Milepost and decide what else sounds good to you.

I didn't mean to imply there are campgrounds on the Dalton Highway. From Coldfoot to Deadhorse there are NO services, only a primitive campground at Galbraith Lake. But there are thousands of nice places to stop along the way. You can dry camp almost anywhere, but you have to bring everything with you.
