Looking for a off the beaten path adventure?
This is a route through the lost coast area of N/W California. Its not technically challenging but there are side roads that can be if you want. Its just a nice Class 1 backroad. We took it this holiday weekend and were rewarded with a plethora of wildlife. Birds of prey (lots of eagles, hawks, and falcons), deer, elk, squirrels, rabbets, not to mention pigs, cows and horses. You want to walk on deserted California beaches? This is the spot. The weather cooperated affording us fantastic views of the rugged coastline and inland mountains. This is the second time we have spent the night at the Mouth of the Mattole Campground. Its a remote BML primitive campground with pit toilets and running water. $8 a night ($4 with a interagency pass) iron ranger. I had already written up a campsite report (
