Re: Mammoth Trip Help Planning Mid May

Every year for the past 5 years, I head to Mammoth Lakes for some dirt bike riding. We usually camp at Big Springs. Just a small and free camping spot that we can ride from. Last year drove the van up to Bald Mountain and up Look Out Mtn also. This year not goin until August.

Laurel Lakes is always a good place for the canoe. Water goin to be cold!

I also head up 2-3 times each summer for moto and MTB riding. The riding there is outstanding.
My favorite 'developed' camping around Mammoth is the Rock Creek area. The scenery there blows me away, there are several USFS campgrounds, and there are some excellent MTB trails and fishing nearby. We prefer Iris meadow or Big meadow. Neither take reservations.

If you want to boondock, I've got a nice place off of Casa Diablo Road, about 10 miles out of Mammoth. Nice scenary, and very remote. Let me know and I'll try and locate the GPS coordinates.

Coyote Flats is pretty nice outside of Bishop. Although it might possibly have snow still next month. This area is super cool, high elevation backwoods camping. Lots of hiking options out of there also.

Bill -

I may be shifting my mid-May Oregon trip into a Hwy 395 corridor trip. If so, I'll keep a lookout for you. With all the late snow I'm not sure how many of the higher elevation places will be accessible. I think I can write off using Tioga Pass to get over there for sure.

Re: Mammoth/395 Trip Help Planning Mid May Update 29 April

Rob,

We have decided to do the 395 corridor for our trip and will be starting out at Alabama Hills as well. We'll get in late Friday night. We'll work our way north and either return to SF Bay area via Tioga Pass if it is open, or through South Lake Tahoe. I'm going to put together a list of potential places to explore and let the weather, snow level and our mood determine where we end up each day.

I've seen some great photos from Alabama Hills somewhere on this forum before. If anyone has a good "secret" place you can send coordinates for in AH would be great. It's nice to know what your are shooting for when you drive into an unknown area late at night.

Hope to bump into you on the trip.

Phil
