Re: Maze District - Canyon Lands

Phil, that's a fabulous trip and nice writeup. It truly is one of the most remote and beautiful places to visit. When I was there I came in from Hite and got nearly to the Maze overlook, but changed route and went up Flint road switchbacks to camp along the upper edge. The road below is quite rough and I was not that comfortable about being alone on that rough a route. I can't believe it was easy to make those hairpins in an EB, or your friends trailer. Nice photos. Two of mine:

Re: Maze District - Canyon Lands

Hey PJ, LOVE the trip report! I like the way you showed plenty of road pics for fellow SMBr's to size up!! It is a HUGE help to determine if we/I'm up for it! Cudo's and thank you! I had a quick question about gas and your buddy...by the signs it looked like a 87mi to Doll House and 107mi trip to HIte crossing...would round trip be 214? You said he had to turn back and was wondering if was bad gas milage b/c of the pace or size of his gas tank or even where you can get gas before you even get to the road? Would love to try this (especially b/c of the report) but have the standard gas tank on my SMB range usually 300mi + per tank and no Jerry cans (as of yet)..so what is your take/advice?

Re: Maze District - Canyon Lands

Hi CTB -

Thanks. I like doing trip reports as payback for all those that have helped me plan trips and provide some daydreaming.

As for mileage, I'd go to the Maze District web site and pull down the full res map and check out mileages. Keep in mind a lot of this is slow 4-low going so mileage will not be the best. Last gas for us was Green River. I have a 46 gallon tank, but don't recall how much diesel I had left when we returned to Green River. FJ's get pretty bad mileage in general and towing the heavy trailer he had I'm sure it was really bad on the trail.

My best advise, is map out what mileage you think you will do on the trip. Take your typical 4-wheeling fuel mileage you get on the van and drop it a bit for all the very slow 4 wheeling you'll do on this trail and make sure you'll have enough. If you have doubts, just make sure you bring extra with you.

My friend, who has been 4wheeling forever, just didn't do the math ahead of time and I just assumed he had so didn't ask until it was too late.

Go and have fun! I look forward to your report.

Phil

Re: Maze District - Canyon Lands

Thanks for the quick replyPhil!! Sounds like a plan + great advice...we are heading out to SW Colorado, SE Utah for ten days in October...we figured we could probably escape the higher altitude snows...unlike the rest of the Rockies (eh)...We travel alone most times so the lack of traffic on that route has us worried and intrigued...but as always, we figure, "Someone will be along sometime." Again, thanks for the great trip report!

Re: Maze District - Canyon Lands

Awesome trip! I have just started to plan one based on this route. What should be the best time of year to head to this location?

Wonderful trip report. Makes me seethe with self-loathing because I have failed twice to make it to Dollhouse: first time I just chickened out, the second time I broke a spring shackle. I have reservations for October...

Z
Zeta - Did you do this trip in October?
