Meet and Greet (Work) - February 2012

On another post on the Forum I mentioned that I am involved in the Boy Scouts of America and am on the staff of the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous campout event held each February for over 1700 boys and leaders from the Las Vegas Area Council. This year we are kind of short staffed. I've been given permission to recruit any Forum members who would like to help out. You don't have to be registered with the Boy Scouts and women are also invited to serve.

The event will be held at the Moapa Indian Reservation just north of Las Vegas (near the Valley of Fire) on February 10-12, 2012. You must fill out a staff registration form and pay a fee of $20 per person. The fee pays for your meals, a commemorative belt buckle and a tin rendezvous mug -- in case you're into trinkets. You do NOT have to pay for your campsite.

If you would like to work on the black powder rifle crew they will train you at the site if you come early -- Thursday night so you can be trained Friday morning. Several of the staff members go out to the site a couple of days early to set up the areas, so if you wanted to make a several day trip of this you could arrive Wednesday or Thursday. I usually get out there about 10:00 am on Friday (but might come earlier if there's other SMBlers there). Most of the 1700 boys and leaders only stay Friday night and Saturday. Some units and some of the staff stay through Sunday and leave in the morning or afternoon on Sunday. I leave Saturday night after most of the units have checked out so I can be back to town for my church responsibilities on Sunday.

Here's the flier on the event: http://www.lvacbsa.org/openrosters/DocD ... &id=103370

If we get several people coming with their rigs we will set up our own camping area so we can all be together. I, however, will be camped in my rig in the middle of the boys since I am in charge of camp check-in, traffic, security and camp check-out. My staff positions are full, but there are other staff areas that need help.

Here are pictures of some of the events held at the Rendezvous. You could assist in any of these areas - plus the staff kitchen can always use some help. Other than the kitchen staff and a few other positions, most of the duties only require you to work on Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m.

Let me know on this discussion stream if your interested and what questions you have. Then send me your email address (mac@imglv.com) so I can send you the registration form. This is a great opportunity for you to meet other Sportsmobilers and to help out the Boy Scouts.

Thanks,

Mac

Re: Meet and Greet (Work) - February 2012

I thought I should add how easy these assignments are. As you can see in picture #2, your job may be as easy as sitting on a log timing the boys as they saw the log. In picture #3 you might be showing the boys how to shoot a bow and arrow. Most of the jobs are just determining which boys go next for whatever activity they are doing (picture #6). Most of the activities are self-explanatory or need little "teaching" of the boys. You can be taught in just a few minutes how to teach these activities. So, other than working with the boys from 9:00am to 4:00pm, you get a nice night or two of camping, three free hot meals, socialization with other great people, and the satisfaction of helping young boys become strong men of character. And, by the way, you can write-off all of your expenses on your 2011 taxes as a donation to the Boy Scouts of America. Yep! That's right. Your travel expenses to, from and at the event are considered a donation -- even your $20 registration fee. Now that's an offer you can't refuse.

Just curious but what are they doing in picture #4? I was a scout long ago but don't remember seeing that before.

Good question. I can't remember, but I will find out. Obviously the instructor isn't very good with the tool since he's wearing two bandages.

They are flint knapping. That's what I thought they were doing, but I wasn't sure -- so I checked. Here is a link that describes flint knapping: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knapping. Gooseberry was right.

No. Oh, sorry! I thought you meant for the Boy Scouts. I think you meant for the cheerleader camp.

Re: Meet and Greet (Work) - February 2012

Still looking for volunteers. Have only heard from two Forum members who said they were interested, but I don't know yet if they are actually coming.
