NORRA Mexican 1000

https://www.norra.com

NORRA (National Off Road Racing Association) was the first promoter of the original Mexican 1000 Rally in 1967. This rally evolved into today's SCORE Baja 1000.

NORRA and the Mexican 1000 Rally have returned to the Baja Peninsula, as of a few years ago, with what has become one of the best Off-road events of the year.

This year's Mexican 1000 starts in Mexicali, BC Norte and finishes in San Jose del Cabo, BC Sur and runs from April 27th through May 1st.

There are classes for vintage race cars and motorcycles and modern race cars and motorcycles. The vintage cars are really cool and the focus of the event. There are currently more that 125 entries registered.

The event consists of "Special Stages" run at race speeds and "Transit Stages" with time limits and other restrictions. Each day ends at a wonderful location in Baja and there are parties and meals that make the whole event the most fun you could possibly have in Baja.

There is also a charity Poker Run down the course that is open to any capable vehicle.

Jan and I will be taking our SMB down to support a couple of the teams racing in vintage classes. As crew members, registered for $60 each, we will be able to attend all the parties and events and have an awesome time camping our way down the peninsula.

I though I would put this out as an invitation to other SMB's to join us in the epic adventure. This is, as always better with 4-wheel drive, but 2-wheel drive accessible.

Is anyone interested?

Re: NORRA Mexican 1000

I might be interested in meeting up with you. I was checking out the website looking for a map of the event and couldn't find it. Did I miss something? Is there a map available?

I'd be on my motorcycle and plan on doing some tent camping. Will there be tent camping available?

Re: NORRA Mexican 1000

Map won't be public to discourage prerunning. First day is from Mexicali to Bay of LA, second to Loreto, third to La Paz and fourth to San Jose del Cabo. There will be many people tent camping and the organizers will be providing camping areas and hotel rooms in BoLA to use as bathrooms/showers for the tent campers.

It would be fun on your bike!

How far down have the pushed the pavement? Last time I was down there I think it ended somewhere just south of Puertecitos.

Ends about 3 miles north of the Pemex at Gonzaga Bay.

Re: NORRA Mexican 1000

What is the requirement for insurance these days? Do you need to stop at the border and buy insurance?

I don't think there is a requirement by the country of Mexico, it's just that most likely your existing auto insurance doesn't cover you while in Mexico. Do you feel lucky?

If you're a member of AAA, I'd recommend checking with your local office to see if they offer Mexican auto insurance. Much easier, and quicker IMO, than buying the insurance near the border.

Re: NORRA Mexican 1000

I have a year round liability policy that costs ~$170 for my wife and me. Many people use http://www.bajabound.com/ for their insurance and info.

You are required to carry liability insurance - it will keep you out of jail while they determine fault and liability, otherwise they will hold you while they figure it out.

If you have a vehicle of value you will want full coverage. Insurance can be bought by the day.

If you are serious about going, you should register as a "Crew Member" with on of my friends' teams and get a wristband that covers food, drink and activities for only $60. You can chase down with us, but we are staying in Cabo until May 8th or so. The rest of the team will be heading north after the race and you could caravan back with them - a two day trip.

Re: NORRA Mexican 1000

I'm seriously tempted. Does your chase route follow the race exactly or do you take a different route? Deep sand is not a friend of my 900 pound "traveling geared up" motorcycle setup.
