Is 4WD an absolute necessity for Pismo? Or could a carefully-driven 2WD/locker setup on aired-down 285's romp around a bit on the dunes and make its way to your envisioned meetup?

My van is 2wd, locked, on 285's. I just air down straight to 8-10psi from the get go and it does fine. If you've got some sand driving experience, 2wd is fine. I go all over the dunes only avoiding bowls and sharp climbs.
That being said... even an aired down 4wd can bury itself if the driver isn't compotent.
Either way, there's never a shortage of people willing to help out if someone gets stuck.

Looks like rain is in the forecast next weekend. But the forecast will change I'm sure.

I saw that too, that just means extra traction, right?! What do you guys think, rain or shine? Skip the bonfire and just go for a group drive through the dunes? I'm game regardless of weather.

I'm also game regardless of weather, however I can't get there until about 2:30. I'll be bringing some wood for a fire and deploying the awning if necessary

Now that my Van is back together We may make it for the day. Any specific place to meet? At what time are we shooting for?
