Olympic Peninsula

I managed to get out for a 4 day trip a few weeks ago. Weather was unseasonably beautiful for the rain forest. I left Portland on a Friday afternoon and made it up to Kalaloch in time to pull over and watch the sun set.

I met up with a buddy who keeps an Airstream trailer parked up in the area. This is his 15 year old English Cocker......

The main reason for the trip was to re-charge my batteries and hopefully get a steelhead to grab a swung fly.

Just by chance, the opportunity to go out on the ocean and fish for Ling cod presented itself. It's not really my type of fishing but, I knew I'd be a big hero at home if I could bring home some nice fillets. So I jumped at the chance.

Success...

Here's to a great summer season and lots of happy trails.

Re: Olympic Peninsula

Randy, good to see you using your van for what you intended.

I was up on the Olympic Peninsula for several day a few years ago - beautiful.

Nice pictures!

Re: Olympic Peninsula

Looks like you had a good time. Ling Cod are some good eating fish but hooking up a big Steelhead sure is fun.

Re: Olympic Peninsula

I hadn't ever thought of the olympic peninsula as a great place for stargazing (we head east of the Cascades....

Might need to think about that!

Fished 4 days rather casually. On the last day before the drive home I went back and fished that run. Fished all the way through without a grab. Right down towards the bottom when I was almost done I saw a nice big fish rise. I had a feeling that I wasn't getting down deep enough. There was nobody else around, so I went back up and swapped out flies. I put my heaviest weighted fly on and went through again with some nice stack mends to really get it down. Hooked up at the bottom and did battle for a while only to have it come unbuttoned after 2 aerials.
