Now that that Labor Day is passed we thought we would up to the Metolius River in Oregon. Unfortunately there is a forrest fire I that area. Wa saw an article in the local paper saying how smokey it was in the area. We called a friend that lives near Sisters Oregon and he said that it was really bad at times.

Not wanting to be coughing all night we pulled out the Allstays Camp and RV App and headed for the coast.

We landed at Tillicum Beach Campground between Waldport and Yahats. It is in the Siuslaw National Forrest. The cost is $24/per night but with our senior pass it as only $12.



Tillicum is on he beach side of the highway 101 on a low bluff overlooking he ocean. Here is a flight of stairs to get down to the beach.



The campground is very quiet and is open all year round. Many of the campsites have ocean views. There are flush toilets but no showers.

We spent the weekend reading eating and sleeping. We also took walks on the beach. There is eight miles of sandy beach between Waldport and Yahats.



We plan to go back.

So, you had to change your destination - so what?

The destination is only the excuse to go on a trip. Doesn't matter if you get there or not, as long as you go and come back safely. Glad you had a good time.

One of the problems of living in the Willamette Valley is deciding which direction to head for a nice weekend. As Larrie has shown there are many options for a good plan B. Mountains or coast....Coast or mouuntains?? It's a rough decision but someone has to make it. This is the perfect time out here on the Left Coast for both destinations. Cool at night and still toasty warm during the day. I'm guessing Larrie has to drive about 50-75 miles in either direction to find a prime location on either the coast or in the mountains.

Thanks for the post. I've got a 3 day weekend coming up and have been trying to decide what to do. I was thinking about heading to Seattle to check out some live music but after looking at Larrie's pictures I think I'll head to the beach and listen to the waves instead.

You are right, 50 to 75 miles to the coast depending on destination. The same for the cascades. The other thing about the Willamette Valley is that we do not have to deal with he Portland traffic.

We really enjoy being 1 to 1-1/2 hours from a great destination. Especially on the trip home. No getting up early and getting home late after a long road trip. Makes for a better Monday morning.

Thanks for the report. I really want to get up there one of these days. Does stuff close down along the coast in the winter? Is the highway clear in winter or is it chain city?

I opened my front door in Bend on Sunday morning and it was as if I was right in the middle of a campfire. The weather had really pushed the smoke down low and it was awful. I heard it was even smoky directly south around the Cascade Lakes Highway area too.

Dave, it snows once in a blue moon up the Oregon Coast Highway. You'll see snow over the mountain passes if you wanted to hit central Oregon, but that just means you'll lock in the hubs for 30 - 60 minutes. No big deal.

I'm sure Larrie will agree, the Oregon coast is amazing in the winter. Sometimes nasty stormy and windy (which is cool), but sometimes you'll get amazing sunny days in the middle of winter too.

Highway 101 is open all year from Brookings to Astoria in the winter. The only thing that could close the road is a mud slide after a lot of rain. As rockbender said it can be beautiful stormy or beautiful sunny. Some campgrounds close for the winter while others are open. Some small town stores reduce their hours while others do not. Snow or ocean is a tough decision but we usually wind up at the ocean.
