Re: Racetrack, Death Valley Group Trip - October 4-6, 2013
Looks like Tim and Rachel stayed another night with Steve and maybe Ron and Brad up on Hunter Mountain. Is that the sunset or a massive forest fire?

Tim and Rachael are in the middle of building their van and have yet to convert it to 4WD. They did have some sturdy light truck tires and lots of off-road driving experience in other vehicles. No one in the group knew what to expect from Hunter Mountain Road and as it turned out the road was rough in some spots but manageable with some skill and common sense. They also had the advantage of several 4WD'ers nearby just itching to make use of all those nice winches and tow straps that unfortunately went unused once again.

So was the guy 'safe' or 'out' at what I'm guessing was second base?

Looks like a new sign at Teakettle Junction. All the old kettles are missing. Time to start anew!

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley Group Trip - October 4-6, 2013
Hunter Mountain Rd. was easily 2wd all the way in either direction. The only time it would be 4wd would be if it was wet. It's really a much prettier drive than I expected. At the summit you are in dense cedar forest with several springs and abundant wildlife. I saw several spots that would be nice dry camps. Eric and I made the run from The Race Track out to Hwy 190 in about 2.25 hours. Where did everyone camp Sunday night?
