But, not at Racetrack. And late October should be near perfect weather.

Following this closely as it would be a fantastic drive and I have never seen it. I am open on date now.

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

I am glad this got a bump today. I was going to do it myself soon anyway. The first weekend of October looks like the most popular and would work best for me as well. Any suggestions on how long to wait before finalizing the date? Is there anyone who can't make it for Oct 4-6 that really wants to go? Post here or PM me.

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

I would love to meetup with some of you folks. Been hanging around the forum for 3 years / owner for 2 but never connected IRL with any other members. Love Death Valley. Never had my rig down there yet.

October will be difficult for us schedule -wise, but the early dates would be those that I'd have the best chance of attending. Count me as a "probably" for 10/4 - 10/6

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

Sounds like fun. Panamint Springs is a good meetup spot. Count me in for this one (tentative on the first weekend because I might need to be back in Santa Rosa on the 7th, but no problem on the 2nd weekend). Based on my experience putting a group together last year for DV it can be like herding cats but it all came together nicely and I met some fine people.
I can tell you the main road into the Race Track is bone jarring washboard. You either bomb it at 40mph or bump along at 10. Don't know about Hunter Mountain but just looking at some pictures of Lippencot makes my palms sweat. Come on Tapatio throw your hat in. I'll be able to fully commit in a day or 2.

The only weekend I can't go is the 11-13th. My hat is in!

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

I am ready to declare October 4-6 as the weekend for this event. The group site for Panamint Springs appears to be booked for October 4, but I think we can make do with individual sites as needed. I'll call today to see how many sites are still available for that night.

Here is a link to the proposed route in and out: http://goo.gl/maps/V9wTk.

This would be my ideal itinerary:
Friday Oct. 4, afternoon: Arrive at Panamint Springs Resort. Meetup and camp.
Saturday Oct. 5, morning: Break camp and drive to Racetrack via Hunter Mountain Road.
Saturday Oct. 5, evening: Arrive at Homestake Dry Camp and camp.
Sunday Oct. 5, morning: Break camp and drive back to Highway 190 via Hunter Mountain Road.

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

There are a lot of road closures due to flash flooding recently. It might be a good idea to keep checking the morning report and give the park a call.

Re: Racetrack, Death Valley - October 2013

Gotta love Mother Nature. I don't want to give up, but should setting a date be postponed until there is word on when the roads will be repaired? I would hope that by October, the major paved roads at least would be open and that we could get to Racetrack via Ubehebe crater if we had to. Thanks for the link to the morning report. There is also a Facebook page with nice pictures at http://www.facebook.com/DeathValleyRoadConditions

Speaking of which, whose red Sportsmobile is lurking in the background of this shot? I am jealous.: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... permPage=1
