Re: Dog Medical Emergency - Alert and Lessons

My dog has had several run ins with porcupines (always the losing end). So now he has a vendetta against porcupines....thinking he is going to win this time. This summer will probably start aversion training (shock him when he gets near a porcupine).

Most of the quills (porcupine or cactus) eventually come out on their own, of course the path they travel may cause problems. The sooner you are able to remove the quills the better, as they do migrate deeper with time. The quills in or around the mouth need vet care, as he has to be put under. Blupaddler, great iphone app. idea!

My doggie kit includes:
gloves he has never bit anyone, but he snaps when I come at his mouth with the needle nose pliers
needle nose pliers
doggie pain killer
doggie antibiotic
benadryl (makes them drowsy). Be careful on any anesthetic, so as they don't stop breathing.
muzzle, never used, but should be put on when in danger area, so he can't bite the porcupine
Duct tape to wraps his legs together.
Bandana to cover his eyes
Bite stick, duct tape it secure
Been thinking about getting a GPS dog collar for peace of mind.
Good thing you were prepared, and that Coop is doing better.
