Ruby Mtns and Eastern Sierra camping hiking suggestions?

We head out next week for the Eastern Sierras and North Eastern Nevada. Looking forward to exploring Sonoma and Tioga Pass areas as these are both closed when we come by in the Winter/Spring to or from Baja but know they have got to be spectacular.

We will loop over to The Ruby Mtns in Nevada as well before returning to the PNW. We've seen them from both sides many times but never went in to check them out.

All day hiking/boondocking suggestions greatly appreciated. We don't mind getting dirty.

Joe

Thomas Canyon Campground, Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains in North Eastern Nevada, South West of Wells, South East of Elko. Beautiful place, drive a couple more miles to the trailhead at the end of the road, you will find something you want to do.

A nice stop that's kinda on the way is Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park if you like dinosaurish fish and well preserved ghost towns. Some nice dirt roads in the vicinity as well.

I endorse this campground! Lamoille Canyon and the Rubies are a slice of heaven on earth, if you like that sort of thing It's been quite some time since I camped there, but is still on my list to return to. I named my Border Collie after this place even. I have a painting I did in Lamoille that I could have sold many times but never wanted to part with it.

Also a bit further SE is the Great Basin National Park.... Not sure of your itinerary but its maybe 5 hours from Lamoillle. Looks like there are campgrounds there now, and wow for spectacular- it is worth a trip to see the Bristlecone pine habitat and Wheeler Peak. I love Nevada- so much beautiful country in NE Nevada especially.

I agree that Lamoille Canyon is a must-see. The campground there is OK and makes the hiking in the canyon accessible, but I highly recommend going to the south end of the Ruby's and up Harrison Pass. At the pass you can go north or south and find some great boondocking.

Good and valuable info regarding boondocking around Harrison Pass... I looked online and the Lamoille CG appears to be QUITE a bit larger than was I was there, so most likely more developed than I would prefer now.

If you plan on going up Tioga Pass there's not a whole lot of Boon Docking, mostly campgrounds. Were you planning to visit Yosemite? At Saddlebag Lake there are a few small campgrounds and at the lake marina (in the past) they have had a water taxi that takes hikers to the backcountry. Very beautiful country to say the least. I'm not too sure when they shut down for the season. Inside the park, Gaylor lakes hiking trail takes you to the Great Sierra Mine which is the crest of the sierra range.

Over by Mono Lake there are several nice forest service trails that have always served me well as a stopping point for me. Read S/S/O Mono Lake

Great Basin is an interesting place and although no boon docking is allowed, just outside the park boundary there are a few places to camp. The cave tour is nice.
