Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

We're thinking of going to the Oregon Dunes. One problem we're already realizing is that since we need to go in April, some (many?) campgrounds don't seem to be open by then.

I saw twolost's report; thanks.

Any other info appreciated. We'd like a mix of stuff, some quiet hiking, and some OHV nutiness. And fishing. And beachcombing. The usual.

Rob

Re: Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

I have camped down around Florence during the Feb time frame a few years back and just had to drive up a few forest roads to hunker down. I don't recall if the campsites were closed or what not but I have always preferred to explore the back woods for my camping rather than plug into power next to other folks. Of course now with kids and a less adventurous wife I might be next to you at the ole KOA this year.

Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

Check out Reedsport. There are several CGs just south of town pretty much on the beach. There is a dune area for OHVs behind the CGs and a no-vehicles beach for quiet hiking in front, and you've got all the fishing you could want right there in Winchester Bay. I was there in Feb and there were at least 3 open CGs ranging from quiet Umpqua Lighthouse SP to one that catered specifically to the OHV crowd.

Re: Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

We used to camp and ride dirt bikes around the Horsfall Beach and staging area north of Coos Bay. We used to tent camp just off the road there, but I know there are a lot more restrictions than there were 20 years ago. There is still some great areas there to explore.

I'm pretty sure that Horsfall campground is open year 'round, and I think there is another one down the same road.

Re: Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

I was just thinking about the Oregon dunes around Florence as a possible spot in the next few weeks. The week of the 7th is my only open week in April. My brother lives in Eugene so I could meetup near Florence for a couple of days. My thought was to get out on the dunes to camp but I don't know the protocols. I know folks do that in RV's. Any feedback is welcome and meeting up with another party would be my preference.

Re: Seeking info on Oregon Dunes

I think the sand camping is now designated sites, and you need to make a reservation. Most other stuff starts doing that Mayish. It's restricted certain times of year.

I won't be able to get up there till later. And we didn't want to sand camp so I didn't check those sites out closely. We're sorta getting tired of being sandblasted so we'd be inland more if we can. Cough.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do some more investigation and pass on what I learn.
