Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012

Totally interested. Lots of great ideas already expressed...and I'd be good with any of them. The Dec 7-9 dates work as well. Way to go So Cal SMBers!

For remote camping my vote would be Fish Creek in Anza Borrego (see link below). It's 2WD accessible and located just outside of the State Park so you can have camp fires. This location is surrounded by some small hills so it offers protection from wind.

Fish Creek has a lot of interesting trails ranging from 1-4. It's about sea level so typically warmer than the high desert.

Anza Borrego sounds like a good spot. I've only been there once but it was a very interesting and beautiful place. And that time of year it should be nice weather.

Cheers,
John

So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012

Everyone seemed ok with the facilities or the lack thereof of Hungry Valley just to give some idea for our next destination. Speak now or forever hold your peace ;p

Anza sounds and looks awesome. We're open and aren't picky. For us personally since we have a toddler and one more on the way we'd like to limit the commute to 4-5 hrs or less each way. That's just us though.

Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012

So is it similar to Hungry Valley somehow?
I thought other than the dust (mostly from the dirt bikes and such) that Hungry Valley was great.
As long as us 2wd guys can get to the main camping area we are in.
We are looking forward to it...

Not sure on the dates yet. But I have never been to Anza Borrego, and would be up for that!

Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012

We had a great time at the Hungry Valley Meet & Greet and are looking forward to the next one! Anza-Borrego is a great option for the next event.

We attended last year’s Annual Peg Leg Smith Liars’ Contest held on the first Saturday in April at the Peg Leg Smith Monument in Borrego Springs located about 90 miles north-east of San Diego.

On our way out of the park, we followed up with an off road exploration of amazing metal animal sculptures. The sculptures are constructed of welded sheet metal, reinforcement bar, and wire by sculptor Ricardo Breceda of Parris, California. Dennis Avery, a Borrego Springs town benefactor, commissioned these pieces and had them placed on his private land, Galleta Meadows, along Borrego Springs Road at the north and south ends of town. If you are sorry you missed them during prior visits to Anza-Borrego, the first were just installed in 2008. http://www.galletameadows.com

We did not get to see all the sculptures as we almost got stuck in the soft sand and decided to return for the rest at another another visit as it was Easter Sunday and were concerned about rescue.

There is a totally free, totally no trash, no water, no utilities site at the Peg Leg Smith Monument where the snow birds from Canada and full time boon dockers hang out in Borrego’s Springs during the winter. There are no reservations and not much in the way of rules except behave your selves. It would be an easy place to circle the wagons for a SMB Meet. We are definitely planning to return to further explore Borrego Springs!

Dec 7-9 sounds good to me. My SMB is COMPLETELY self contained so any place will be perfect for me.

JJ - those sculptures look very impressive especially with the vast background. Thanks for sharing those pics.

I'm mesmerized at some of the photos taken of Anza, especially the wildflowers and pumpkin field.

My vote is for Anza too.
