SoCal camping advice

Headed to Deaver in Santa Ana for a suspension upgrade. I'm hoping to roll in there mid afternoon from I-15 north. Where's a good place to camp between Vegas and Santa Ana that would get me there at 2:30-3:00 or so? Rather not waste $$$ on a hotel when I can give it Deaver instead.

Camp anywhere in the Mojave Preserve. You could even do the Southern part of Death Valley or the Big Bear area. It is only 4 -5 hours from Vegas to Santa Ana, so you have plenty of time to get there from wherever you camp.
