Suggestions for Trip Christmas - New Year 2011/2012

Folks

Last year was Tour de Utah
So Cal to LV to Utah
GREAT TRIP
Low mileage (less than 2,000 round trip)

Would love to do Baja
but not alone for safety (anyone headed there?)

Looking for this year
Parameters:
Not too cold
Low rain
Low mileage (less than 2,000 round trip)

Thoughts:
1) Dead head up 5 to Northern Cal on a bullet run
Hit the Pacific Coast
Wander down
(this will be wet, but awesome scenery)

2) Southern ArizonaMaybe Deadhead to New Mexico
Wander back

Thanx in advance

Bill, Mrs. & Cooper Wilson

Rob,

If you go to Southern Arizona, a few suggestions:
Bisbee, AZ -- neat historic copper rush town. Beautiful lights in town around the holidays.
Hot springs in Tonopah and Safford, AZ are nice for a bit of relaxation.
Beware of safety in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument; there have been issues with violence related to drug transport.
We've heard good things about Velvet Elvis pizza in Patagonia, AZ
Bird watching along the San Pedro River near Bisbee is good that time of year. It's one of the few North/south running rivers in the area, so migrant birds gather there. This inn has connections to good guides: http://bedandbirds.com/
If there are rains, the Tucson area has some nice seasonal swimming ponds. This book is a good resource: http://www.amazon.com/Day-Trips-Splash- ... 0965768627

Lived in Eureka for 25 years. If you don't hit a storm (they come out of the south) the weather will probably be OK. Summer is the foggy time up there. Temps will be in the 50's. Paved roads obviously OK. The main "dirt" roads up there mostly have some kind of gravel on them and are also OK, but you need to take a look if there's been a lot of rain recently. Depends on where you go. In my humble opinion, that time of year is some of the best weather if you have a little luck on your side.

Cool buddy
our Tour de Utah last Xmas
we dodged the big storms and woke up to fresh snow and no one else... alot

Temps are good, we have suffecent rain gear

However, we are not big hikers, and chilling, wife cooking, wife w/ ipad games and me with my
kindle is the order of the day

We will be testing a Oz Tent RV2 with side flap
Positioned on the passenger side forward, open end to the barn doors
Roof flap UNDER the fiamma, to give us a dry spot for wet clothes and dog
Prob gonna get a Mr. Buddy with propane hose extension for warmth and clothes/dog drying

If by Lost Coast you mean the Usal Road you should definitely get local input before you attempt it in winter. It's not maintained during the winter and you will encounter several sections under a lot of water. I love the area, and while you could have beautiful weather for a week, you could also see 10 " of rain. It's a temperate rain forest.
