Thank God for remote places!

Left Portland last week. Really tough leaving while things were burning but felt like it was all out of our control to help. My Daughter and I planned this 10 days of remote Idaho and Oregon trip before she commissions in the AF later this year. We Landed here at Alvord today after smoke blocked most of Idaho’s best. Hoping 2020 ends on a high note.

We were supposed to head that way, Alvord and Steens, last week as well but cancelled due to the uncertainty of the fires and smoke. Hows the smoke there now? Hoping we can still get down there soon with decent weather to explore.

Can barely make out the mountains through the smoke. The alvord makes up for it. There’s no escape from the smoke that I can see except the coast.

We're all different I guess...but I just don't understand how anyone could live in a city, much less a city like Portland. I want "remote" all the time! This is my back yard:

Portland is less than an hour from beaches, skiing, mountain biking, kiting, climbing and whitewater. Plus home of some of the nations best eateries, breweries, and distilleries. And, some of us have to work. Last I checked, there weren’t a lot of openings for good work in the middle of the desert

As I said, we're all different. Last time anything alcoholic passed my lips was 50 years ago in Vietnam. The only time I eat out is when I'm on the road. So none of that means anything to me.

If you live in Portland you're also living in close proximity to around a million other people, counting all the surrounding communities. When I was at University I participated in a huge study on the effects of living in crowded conditions...and it wasn't pretty. Some of the effects of that in Portland I see on the evening news....last time I drove through Portland I came in from the north and then turned east on US 26. It took 2 hours just to get to Sandy! I don't understand why people subject themselves to living like that.

Give me the remote desert anytime where if I do encounter another vehicle we wave at each other. And at night all I hear is a coyote chorus.
