Thanksgiving in Death Valley

It's been a family tradition to enjoy DV as a family about every 3 years. This was the year and the first time for our newest family member "Rocky". Didn't do a lot of off-road since it was primarily family camping and hiking time, but did do Titus Canyon. Here are a few photos.

Rocky in Rhyolite, NV

More Rhyolite

How's this for battery back-up! Scotty's Castle Underground Tour is worth the time and cost. These batteries were made by Edison and installed in the in the late 1920's or early 1930's. They produced about 110 volts DC. There were two sets so that one set could be recharged by the water powered generator while the other set was being used. They were in use into the 1980s.

Re: Thanksgiving in Death Valley

That's a big battery room! I've driven by Scotty's but never took the tour. Same with Rhyolite. As many times as I've been there I guess I should take the time to check those places out.

Re: Thanksgiving in Death Valley (Part 2)

Here's the west end of the massive unfinished swimming pool at Scotty's Castle.

Here's the tiles for the pool! They are neatly stored in the underground tunnels that were dug and constructed under the Castle. While they are beautiful to behold we couldn't help but wonder if the NPS shouldn't try to find a buyer for them rather than let them just sit there for the next 100 years. I suspect they would draw a nice price and the NPS could find ways to use that money.

Re: Thanksgiving in Death Valley (Part 3)

Last photo, sunrise at Zabriskie Point. While this wasn't the most beautiful sunrise I've experienced there over the years it was the last sunrise anyone will experience there until April 2015. The Point was closed on December 1st for repairs and improvements.

Re: Thanksgiving in Death Valley

I toured the place a few years ago but we didn't see the battery bank or the pool tiles.

I do remember the player piano & organ though......
