Here is the best theory on how the rocks move:

When the winter rains come, the playa becomes very, very slippery. Then the winds blow at up to 100mph, moving the rocks. They all seem to move in the same direction at the same time. But, the next storm may blow in a different direction, so the rock's paths can cross each other or have sharp corners. Makes sense to me.

That's the best argument I could come up with, however there really aren’t enough rocks with the same directional pattern to substantiate it, IMHO of course or at least not that I could see.

But I still like that theory

What's really hard to believe is no one has used any sophisticated techno stuff to track the movement of the rocks. We need someone to sleep with the rocks to figure it out.

Time lapse... let the electronics figure it out. Alternatively build a steel box with a weather cube/positioning system inside and put it with the rocks. Theoretically it should move as well, or if not punches holes in many of the theories.
